Does the UFC need to coach its fighters on post fight interviews?

I think we can all agree that this past Saturday's card was one of the most entertaining of the year. Nearly every fight delivered.

Yet, as entertaining as the fights were, the post-fight interviews were all cringeworthy. The vast majority of fighters didn't call out any specific opponents to generate interest. Rather, virtually everyone just did the usual "I'll fight whoever the UFC gives me". (To be fair, I actually liked Sandhagen's post fight interview.)

If I recall correctly, there were only two specific callouts, and both were awful. Rani Yahya, who won the opening fight of the night, called for an immediate title shot with TJ Dillashaw. Paul Felder had to hold back laughter.

Similarly, Justin Gaethje said he would fight whoever, then half-called out Paul Felder.

Do these fighters not understand how important it is to create a soundbyte for future interest?

And if you need a translator in the cage, just forget it, NO INTERVIEW.

Fighter talks for 2 minutes, translator says 2 sentences....

    This is not working. Sorry.

Gaethje doesn't really need it though his fights are JBG incarnate but yeah these other guys need a ton of work. Mickey Gall in particular put Covington to shame with his cringe. However I think this might have more to do with genetics than training. Trash talk is like athleticism you're either born with a high level ability or you're pure cringe.

Sam Alvey's postfight speeches are incredibly unfunny and way too long.

But I still think he'd be great as a pro wrestling heel who snaps after getting booed.

As bad as Alvey's are, at least they're memorable. Gall's was equally cringe for sure.

Been saying for a long time there's a huge opportunity there for a marketing company. I think 99% of fighters underestimate the value of the time on tv, and specifically right after everyone has watched you win.

Every single time should be the biggest moment of your life, and you should convey that. There's a reason they gave the mic and the floor to guys in PRIDE in that spot. One of my biggest pet peeves in combat sports is when guys spend any of that time trying to display their sponsorships.

    IE:

    Tito yelling "where's my shirt?"

Rashad Evans acting like he'll be getting the belt strapped on 10 more times and spending his one time shaking up some stupid energy drink sponsor(that is clearly defunct).

Marquez's corner shoving a hat on his head and pulling it down over his face after the Pacquiao KO. Most annoying instance I can think of. Just KO'd the most famous fighter in the world in front of the whole world, and you're worrying about satisfying that sponsor(that nobody's even heard of) over promoting your face in front of a billion people. Shockingly short-sighted.

IMO the post fight segments are always a cluster fuck. Whether it is necessary is debatable since a lot of these fighters just went through a mentally and physically draining event that few of us can even imagine. I do not expect them to bust out a pro wrestling promo.

Once they cut all the fighters and bring in actors pretending to fight, this won't be a problem

Add the adrenaline to this, and you generally get a waste of time. Advertisers pay big money for air time, and these fighters don't realize or have the ability to capitalize on the free self-promotion opportunity they are missing out on with their post fight interview.

Very true, if some were better articulated with thought & speech they would catch the eyez & ears of potential sponsors...
