You know that popular belief (or misconception) regarding BJJ practitioners, that if u "punch a black belt in the face, they become a brown belt"
Well does this apply to wrestlers too, or any type of primarily grappling based fighters for that matter?

I myself am not even sure how true this statement is (yet I hear it all the time) as we've seen BJJ black belts receive prolonged beatings across many rounds & then go on to win via submission (Anderson/Sonnen)
We have also seen wrestlers get caught with shots right on the button, early in the fight yet still manage to secure the take down throughout the fight (Cain/Kongo)

Would anybody care to elaborate on this popular belief/misconception? Preferably with examples of fights where wrestlers, sambo fighters, judokas, BJJ fighters, or any type of primarily grappling based fighters were unable to implement their takedowns/submissions/grappling in general/etc after being punched in the face?
In before JDS vs Werdum :D

Basically BJJ specialists aren't used to getting punched in competition so getting hit changes their game a bit because it affects their focus. It's really more for the specialists that transition over to mma

The striking gives you one more thing to think about AND defend against

It makes sense to me that if you train an art that doesn't require you to get punched in the face during training, when you do get punched in the face it will throw you off. Particularly if you get stunned/rocked/dazed whatever.

It's meant for people not used to getting punched while plying their craft, and it's true, though it's not a specific, static, level change like the black to blue belt shit or whatever.

Such a stupid fucking saying

No shit you cant apply BJJ as well, you must use a lot of technique and quick thinking to snatch up a sub so if you are getting punched in the fucking head (wheere you lose equilibrium and shit) of course you cant use technique as well

who said tha shit anyway?

Wrestling is taken away by leg kicks usually. After a few hard low kicks, a wrestler ' s ability to shoot is seriously compromised

Human beings tend to respond to concussion by doing things a little more poorly. It could be wrestling, boxing, BJJ, or calculating the tip at a restaurant. The variable is how hard you have to hit the guy before he drops down a rung. They don't hand you a glass jaw at your belt ceremony and you don't get Mark Hunt's beard if you win Golden Gloves.

It requires two to engage and grapple to even call it wrestling, you cant just run around in karate distance and call that wrestling....Closest would be getting taken down, but anyways theres no belts

Maybe ease off on that thinking and have a better modern mindset, i mean Bruce Lee figured it out years ago, that martial art is just a style, and you don't become the style. Seems obvious today, but maybe back then they had didn't think outside the box.

After your insightful statement, please tell me u believe Cain is going to crush Werdum?

is it SOOOO bad that i think cain is faster and will use inside boxing to hurt werdum? not saying werdum doesnt have a chance tho

Also I think the phrase in question goes from "black to blue belt"

Yup, for the most part. Especially wrestlers who haven't focused and flourished in striking - i.e. Phil Davis.

What was that, an exhibition?
We need, emotional content!

I do believe it, but it doesn't apply to every BJJ guy. It doesn't apply to a guy like Anderson Silva, but you see quite a few black belts get subbed by lower belts, or even guys who don't train BJJ. Jon Jones, for example, subbed Machida and Belfort, now, although I don't think the point of this thread applies to the Machida sub as he got dropped then caught, but I think it does for the americana on Vitor. If Jon and Vitor had a straight-up BJJ match, would Jon've subbed him like that? Probably not. I'm sure I saw Jon say he doesn't actually train BJJ at all.

We saw it with Browne vs Barnett, Barnett eats a knee goes for the take down but can't complete it because he was hurt badly.

Nah. Punch a wrestler in the face and he becomes even more of a wrestler, usually forgetting everythign else he has learned.
