Hi guys, I am a huge Mark Hunt fan and followed him avidly during his pride days. What do you guys think of any chances he may have on making a championship run. Awesome chin, no fear, excellent knock out power, decent tk defense.... His ground game is nil but so were many champion strikers in the past. I feel like he wasted so much potential by not preparing enough in the past but maybe he could redeem himself one last time before retirement.

Its 2012 and he's 3-1 in the UFC...

No one could have guessed that.

No. He has the ability to beat JDS but he'll never make it there unless it's gifted to him a la Chael Sonnen.

Say JDS is the champ and Hunt manages to beat Reem, Bigfoot and some other top 10 fighter who for some reason decides to test his striking against Hunt.

If that happens, then he has a chance but if he goes against Cain, Cormier, Werdum, Mir or Barnett, he will be taken down and will lose the fight there.

He could partially with luck KO three opponents in a row and become the champ. But that is really not likely. He will end up on the ground at some point, and there he will be destroyed. Also, someone like JDS is BY FAR the favorite in striking. Mark is just strong and durable... not that technical.

    This.

And hey stranger things have happened. I won't count Hunt out of the title picture.

He could possibly beat the Champ, however unlikely I may think that is, but no way he can get there without losing to someone like Mir.

Not only did reem submit him, hunt was the one that went for the takedown instead of striking.

Standing, reem Kos him. Grappling, reem submits him.

He won't have a chance at the title unless he's fast tracked and thrown perfect stylistic match ups. But if he has to go through 2 or 3 top 10s like he should then he won't make it.

The Hunt for UFC title brigade was a joke that has been perpetuated for so long that the people who started the joke have forgotten it was one, and genuinely believe it.

    This is exactly what happened.

And yes, JSD would outstrike Hunt.

I wouldn't be totally freaked if he fought against Werdum, Mir or Barnett whom despite having superior ground games also have a great chance of getting KTFO when they shoot on him.

Cain and Cormier however really concern me more than the rest due to their speed and most likely the advantage of great cardio.

A matchup against JDS would actually be interesting in that both fighters have basically the same toolsets with JDS having much better form, technique and probably hand speed. A brawler like Hunt could land one on JDS but I know its a stretch and prayer for him to get in range to do that without catching a bucket of jabs to the face.

He would have to, in one way or another, avoid strong wrestlers who can put him on his ass and keep him there.

That's his obvious bane - even, to say at least, moderately successful MMA wrestler like Tuchscherer had a lot of success in grappling him.

Guys like Cain, Cormier and probably Barnett will probably always be completely beyond his grasp.

Well if they can't get him down, they're going down.

Hunt is one of those people.
