does gi color matter in BJJ?

hey all. i've been in kempo karate for about 9 years, and obviously there was a much more rigid and orthodox system for everything (belt color, gi color, protocols, everythnig).

well it's been some years since then and i've recently decided to join up for this acclaimed BJJ school near me. i went in for a free lesson and it seemed very lax, however, they did say i will need to buy a gi by next lesson.

my question is.. can i use my black gi, or do i have to buy a new white gi? do gi colors have any emphasis in BJJ? this might seem like a totally stupid question to ask, but the instructor never said anything about it, and i can't seem to find any information on it. i just don't want to walk in there wearing a black gi or something if it means something specific in BJJ, heh.

white or blue is usually pretty standard although ive been seeing some ugly red ones on the net. but your kempo gi probably isnt thick enough and may have short sleeves. you need a judo or bjj gi. i know its like$150 or something for a nice one but they last for a long time

Color doesn't matter unless your going to compete, then it may. Your always good if it's blue or white, black is quite often allowed also.

The problem with karate gis, though, is they're not gonna hold up good. Like someone else said find a cheap judo or jiu-jitsu gi for your first gi, and somewhere along your jouney in Jiu-jitsu (assuming you don't quit) you'll want to buy a nicer gi. By then you'll have trained for a while, and you'll probably even know the brand you want.

How many colors on BJJ gis are there anyway? White, blue, black, red, I even saw some guys with dark green ones a few days ago. I went up to one of them and said: "It's Robin Hood I want! I'll get even!"
    He wasn't too happy.

For class its up to the instructor. I beat someone wearing a orange gi then lost this weekend to someone wearing a bright red Koral I think. The reason I lost was not due to the color just that the calls went the guy's way. Came third in gi, first in no gi.

Is that the new Gracie Barra in Poway instructed by Nelson Monteiro? I think I may have rolled with you before, cuz he had a seminar there with Carlos Gracie Jr., Kyra Gracie, Marcio Feitosa, and Marcela Periera. But, to answer ur question Blue or White. You can use your Black gi for practice, but in tournaments they prefer you to wear white or blue.

At the Georgia NAGA I was told there was a girl in a pink gi... I saw her in her pink atama shorts and rash guard. Looked very nice on her (not being too perverted there...) I would have liked to saw the pink gi.

Some schools make you wear a white gi. Rickson's school in west LA for example. Blue gis are not permitted. I guess it's more like the traditional Brazilian old schools under Carlos Sr. and Helio in that respect.

the guys at my gym wear all sorts of colours. white is the most common among the beginner. then blue, but also lots of purple ones too. a few red gi's, and one or two camo ones. a couple of black gi's also. doesn't matter really. i think the basic white ones are cheaper and are usually not the best fitting. but until you start competing, you don't really need an especially well fitting gi.

I prefer white, simply because if someone gets hurt while working out, blood shows up easily so it can be taken care of right away.
