Does Dustin Poirier have what it takes?

care to explain?

Just a gut feeling, honestly. I don't have anything against the guys that are good at all aspects of the game, but masters of none; I just typically prefer the specialists. I think with Dustin's style he'd have to implement a very, very smart game-plan in order to become a champ. However, I don't see him doing that, and considering he is a bit chinny I don't like the fact that he initiates brawls.

27 is still plenty young, and he seems to keep improving. He could definitely make some waves.

Johnson is 16-10 if I'm not mistaken

I'll take porier

I can see he beating any top 10 LW, especially Melendez, Jonhson, even barboza.. but he could loss to any top 15, including dariush, trinaldo or pearson

I feel like if they fought at 155, Porier would certainly beat Swanson and KZ, at least at this point.

He's quick, he's adopting this ever-growing fad of switch hitting (that opponents are still slow to catch on to), and he's pretty well-rounded.

I think he'll break into the top 5. IF he beats MJ, he'll probably be 6 or 7 in the division after that. A super impressive win may even be enough to bump him into the top 5 by the UFC's rankings (though I wouldn't agree).

If he wins 2 more fights, one being a top 5 opponent, I think he'll be in a justifiable position for a title shot. It's hard to pick any LW over another though. And I think Alvarez is a bad match up for him, as is RDA. I think Baboza beats him too if he doesn't get hit clean early.

I agree with most of this. I feel like cutting for FW was putting a big hurting on him. He's much better and looks healthier and LW. Do you think he has a better chance at McGangbang at LW? IMO first fight was a early stoppage... He got clipped and was definitely hurt but I don't think he was out of it just yet.

Love the Diamond, 100% entertainment, just don't see him getting too close to the strap at LW and that's OK.

See him more like a slightly better Matt Brown, must see TV, very good but not quite elite of the elite.

I like Dustin. Good fighter and exciting to watch. Jack of all trades type. I think he stays around 5-10. Wouldn't surprise me if he gets as high as #3. Don't see him going higher that #3.

Poirier would fuck the overrated Alvarez up in about 3 minutes.

He's young and extremely talented, it's impossible to say where his ceiling might be and only a fool would suggest otherwise.

McGregor KO's him stiff again

Eh. Hard to say. His style still plays into McGregor's.

McGregor plays between an agressor and a counter striker. He moves forward when his opponent is retreating or not throwing. And he fights on the counter (sometimes while advancing) when his opponent is leading. He'll break these habits, but I find that to be his norm.

Countering a switch hitter in a stance change (Jack Slack did a nice job covering this I thought, when looking at Mighty Mouse, Cruz, Dillashaw, etc) is when they are more vulnerable.

Since Porier is more of a boxer puncher/ slugger in tactics than a boxer/ kickboxer, I think that mixed with his switch hitting gets him in trouble.

Porier prefers to look for big strikes more often than not, I believe that is a bad strategy to play.

People forget that Conor dominated 80% of the Diaz fight. And Diaz didn't win the other 20%, he basically took the advantage slightly, then poured it on for about a minute straight.

But what Diaz did was brilliant, though. He knew Conor was slowing and rather than load up on a big shot or start recklessly pushing the pace, he just kept hitting him in a precise manner. Over and over, until he landed that clean 1-2 right on Conor's chin. He got Conor flustered, made him work while he was tired, then caught him clean.

That's how I believe you need to beat Conor. Porier's too willing to load up an miss for me to believe he'd beat Conor at 155.

I think Poirier, after his loss against McG is matured as a fighter. As TS said, he is still young and i think he could possibly run for the title if he keep showing improovement in his game.
Against McG he loss, but he got a good lesson: never let your opponent affect your mindset. I'm pretty sure ain't gonna happen again.

Can he do it? As in win the title? I don't think so. I'd like to be wrong as I really like Poirier, but Lightweight is the hardest division in the sport

Agree. The division is by far the most competitive and has the most diverse bunch of fighters in it skill-set wise. Since he's moved up to LW, all his fights have been great to watch.

Once he throws a punch and connects he seems to go in to brawl mode and gets a bit wild. I think he'll have to be a lot more composed against certain fighters in the top 10 if he keeps going on his streak.
