I noticed it for a while: unlike a lot of grapplers who will happily stay in half guard or side control and unleash a steady stream of GnP, Maia is all about passing the guard and achieving mount. It becomes almost futile to resist, because even if opponents bock him off, he methodically slides right back. No wonder that all his submissions in the UFC have come from mount as well (including throw into a triangle choke on Sonnen and recent RNC on Magny).

So, on that note I rewatched Demian Maia's last three fights, and found out that he passed guard to mount combined 17 times (against Magny: 6 times; against LaFlare: 7 times; against Yakovlev: 4 times)! Obviously, if I digged deeply into his other fights, this number would increase quickly. I don't have time for that.

But even 17 passes to mount is likely more than anyone has ever achieved inside the octagon. I mean, who else would dispute? Maybe, only Royce Gracie...

He definitely doesn't have as many as Maia, but DHK might come close to 17. He basically spent three rounds mounted on Siyar.

Jake Shields has a good passing ratio, even passed Maia's guard.

I'm just saying, now a days, it's super frustrating to watch him get mount THAT often but not finish there :p

When he submits people, it's always from the mount, so he can do something with it (most notably in his last fight). Unfortunately, Maia has preferred position over submission after that Marquardt KO which changed his style (he started his UFC career with 5 submissions in a row!).

I think Maia is one of the best grapplers in the game. I would like to see him against Jacre.

Maybe if he had Randa Markos level BJJ he could finish a fight.

In an mma fight, I think Jacare jacks him up on the feet. On the ground, it's probably a stalemate but I've always been more impressed with Jacare's creativity and fluidity. His armbar transition in the second Camozzi fight was so dirty.

Of course, that's not really a pass. He just threw Chael Sonnen under a mount from a standing position.

Jacare also seems like he would have a physical advantage too

Man, seeing that just always baffles me. Great stuff by Maia. Poor Chael tho... :icon_cry2
