I've seen all kinds of videos online of people doing this. Is this a horrible idea for someone to try and do on their own? I've been thinking about doing this, but I am aware that this could be a terrible idea. Anyone ever done this?

I think you can buy the needles at your local pharmaceuticals store.

I'm wondering if there's any horror stories about self-drainage.

It doesn't seem hard, but I'm sure needles could be tricky.

you can get seringes from alot health clinic and shit like that. They give them out for free sometimes because they know people are going to use them, might as well give them free ones to help prevent them from transfering diseases and shit.

I got my needles from our vet. Big Gauge suckers that way it drains faster. I does hurt but there are things that hurt a lot more.

When I went to the ENT to have it finally sticked-up I offered to drain it for him since I got so good at it.

When I was in high school, I had to have my ears drained. I was very annoyed at how little time and effort it took the doctor to drain my ears, it was less than 5 minutes and he charged 100$ for the visit. A little bacitracin on my ears, an insertion and draw of the fluid, and I was on my way. From then on out I got my own needles and drained my ears myself.

Draining is pretty easy but there are a few things you need to know.

    1) Make sure you are diligent about disinfecting the ear and your hands. Get some 70% alcohol and wipe it on your ears liberally and let sit for 30 seconds minimum (if it dries reapply). Also do your hands just to be safe.

    2) Get in front of a mirror and then take syringe (I found 25 guage worked the best) and slowly insert into the puffed up part of ear. Once fully inserted slowly aspirate (pull back) on the siringe suction thing. If nothing come out slowly pull the siringe out while maintaining suction. You should hit a sweet spot and most/all of the bloody fluid will come out.

    3) Now if you ears are bad this is the MOST IMPORTANT thing (other than not getting it infected). You will need to use a compress or it will keep filling back up. I made my own from a clip type thing and a piece of card board after having to redrain my ears 10 times. Just make sure it has constant pressure on the area drained and wear this for a few days and you should be good.

After this is done take 1-2 weeks off before ANY training and consider wearing headgear for a mobnth or two when you get back.

Fool proof way to fix undried cauli. Just make sure ANY signs of infection and get to a doctor ASAP. Remember the importance of the compress and disinfecting. Good luck!

I drained mine myself about 5 times. Saved my ear every time. Trick is to know when the perfect time to drain is so it doesnt refill with blood. Got the needles from Walgreens. Ask somebody who has experience to help.
