I know a lot of people like rings for mma but I think the cage is better for the sport. I was wondering why no one uses a square cage. I think it would be better for viewing live "less sides without poles" and would be better for fighters to cut off angles. Personally I would love for it to made out of plexiglass to solve the grabbing the fence issue and provide a clearer view. So, does any promotion use a square cage?

Some small time shows used a square. But the original reason behind not using a square is because it offers an advantage to strikers and allows you to easily corner your opponent. Grapplers fight on an open round ring, strikers fight in a square, an octagon, hexagon kind of meets halfway.

The infamous Travis Fulton vs Jeremy Bullock fight took place in a square cage like 15 years ago. Don't see too many around.

To answer your question no. No major mma orgs do.

And this is the reason why.

That's why I would love a square cage. Great for cutting off angles and making people scrap.

a square cage would be great for wrestlering also.... push into corner

Plexiglass again? Plexiglass is hard and unyielding, it also breaks into sharp pieces.

Cages and ring ropes yield to force. They give under pressure, absorbing impacts.

So, yeah, I'll take the occasional fence grab over having some guys skull crack open against the plexiglass, or having it break under the force of two 260+ pound guys slamming into it and cutting them both up.

Tachi Palace had a square cage with rounded corners for awhile

I believe elite xc had a square cage with round corners for a couple of events, they experimented with a lot of different cage shapes while they were around. I could be wrong though, it's been so long since they've been around

It would have to be like WWE hell in a cell with ring ropes. :icon_chee
