MMA is a niche-pseudo sport that is dangerously close to WWE territory. It's a freak show circus act.

Outside of Shertards and hardcore fans who really cares about a fighter's "legacy"?

Yet fighters seem to take It so seriously.

It's not a respected legitimate sport to begin with by the mainstream. Hence any legacy isn't likely to be respected.

Even top fighters will be forgotten and legacy's/GOATs etc will just be something we debate on sherdog.

    do you mean monetary value?

i think for an answer, just review in your own head how many GOAT threads you see on this forum every time you log in. obviously someone cares. and obviously different people value this stuff differently.

so yes there is value. to some. maybe not to you. and not monetary. unless GSP can get a few more commercial opportunities by staying in the public eye.

Different groups of fans value different things in determining a legacy.

Legacy doesn't exist. Given enough time, society will forget anyone and everything they accomplished. Given more time, the human race will cease to exist and all intelligent life as well. The universe will collapse in on itself and nothing you did will matter one bit.

The lesson? Eat ice cream and drink booze. Have fun. Life's a rollercoaster ride, and the ride lasts less than you think.

The wider world is only a factor in getting rich, if you're the best in your chosen discipline, you are indeed a winner in life.

Legacy will always be a thing in every sport that has ever existed.
There's legacy in darts and bowling.

No one gives a shit about MMA legends. You have fans and promoters talk shit about their fighters meanwhile PKA/Full contact karate kickboxing fighters like Bill Wallace and don Wilson are talked about to this day like they are gods. As the case in boxing. Oh hell you have people in the traditional martial arts who have loyal and respectful followers within their circles.

Meanwhile MMA fighters of the past were either bums or overrated. Add to that the behaviour of people like Dana white who are dismissive and disrespectful.

A legacy is an intangible asset. What he/she did to earn that 'legacy' is what people care about.

That is what MMA fans struggle to accept. Terms like 'legacy' are mostly used to uplift fighters they like, and to disparage ones they don't. MMA is considered a freak show. It's not mainstream at all. Certain fighters and personalities of it are. Most people could not give a fuck. There is no proper way to quantify who actually is a 'real' fighter, or who has a 'warrior' spirit. Most people would get into a cage and fight for money if the price was right. MMA is really nothing special.

Its about being the best fighter i dont think fighters need the approval to know what their legacy is, also the only fighters that care about legacy are the ones that reached it or are in reach of it.

Money comes and goes. The feeling of knowing that some 300lb neckbeard on Sherdog respects you lasts a lifetime.

Tbh its all the fans opinion either way if you win the fans over and go undefeated for a while guess what your a goat but if you only take easy fights ect. To keep winning and we know your picking ur fights and you retire undefeated your only the goat in your own eyes its all opinion
