Do you use Microsoft Office, an open source alternative, or something else?

I've mostly used Microsoft Office throughout my computing life, but I decided to switch things up recently and see what life was like with LibreOffice as my go-to office suite. It does everything that I need an office suite to do. My only concern is compatibility issues that someone running Office might run into when I send them a file.

What do you guys use? MS Office? LibreOffice or OpenOffice? Something else, like WordPerfect?
 
I have to use MSOffice, unfortunately.

I don't bother for my home computer though.

I heard something interesting the other day that GRRM writes on Wordstar, and I can see why. I constantly feel like using MSWord especially is a fight. It's constantly outsmarting itself.

Excel I like but what little I've fucked around with the standard OSX spreadsheet app it seems like it's functionally pretty much the same.

I almost exclusively use matlab/octave, miktex, with a java front end for automated reports.
 
Looks like some shit that tech hipsters use and convince themselves that they actually like doing it.

No dude. If you're writing a document with equations, tables, graphs, pictures, or a bibliography, it's the ONLY way to go. It's not even debatable.

Yeah, I've heard that. WordStar on an old computer that doesn't have Internet access.

Apparently there are some minimalist word processing programs out there that are specifically designed to appeal to people who get frustrated with Word's pro-active feature set.

I would think his choice is the sum of not wanting it be possible to hack his drafts, the ultra stability of an older OS, lack of frustration with a simple word processor, and the fact that he's producing manuscripts that don't need graphical accountrements (wow case in point Safari wants to "correct" that to "accouterments").

I myself have no use for an ultra simple word processor but boy howdy do I see the appeal.

I actually do your wordpad sometimes just to take certain notes or placeholder data.

Libreoffice is the way to go since updates from Openoffice is very slow. There will be alot less issues if you and the other people you work with use the odf format (odt, ods etc) and not the MS ooxml format. MS is just being a dick by not adopting odf and trying to protect its own expensive monopoly.
 
I use mix of Jasper reports and MS Office at work, and MS office at home. I got a pro package for $15 so why not.
Also I like Visio much more than the Libre Office counterpart.
In the past I had to create docs with a shitload of added content like archives and spreadsheets, and libre office used to crash a lot.
