Do you think our stress levels are higher than people 100 years ago?

I think most people would just automatically say yes, but it doesn't feel like it should be.

A century ago most of us would be plowing fields in the hot sun all day, worrying about whether we'd have enough to put food on the table for our 6 kids.

And the women would work all day washing clothes and cooking because that shit took way longer back then without any machines to help do the work.

The only relaxation time you'd get is maybe an hour before bed you sit on your porch and smoke your pipe.

Nowadays you work for 8 hours, maybe run a few errands, and wind up with probably 3 or 4 hours to relax, play video games, watch movies, hang with friends, etc.

It’s definitely less. With things like modern medicine and food it makes everything so much easier and convenient. Health is a big part of why people get stressed and although they worried about finances less cuz society was smaller they probably were less healthy and stuff

Maybe it's more but more dumb shit stuff I reckon. Interesting question!

depends on what you do I guess.
I think society has made it much easier for people to break mentally and emotionally with little support.
Working from home, covid etc Has caused some people to constnatly be on call/alerts etc.

Life conveniances are better, as is health for sure.

But I think it all depends on your situation

Ive only just started to be able to slow down/stop stressing as much and its taken a new job and a new approach to my life style just to be able to have sundays where I dont have any work or chores to do. But I live alone, single and dont have anything else except a dog to be responsible for, I cant imaigne how bad it could be with someone who works a full time, demanding job plus having a family or such

I think so. I think it's harder to maintain a certain lifestyle and social norms (ie fitting in, paying different bills).

It's equavielant to going to a third world country, where being poor and looking a certain way is the norm.

100 years ago was the Roaring 20s. WWI was over. Cars were being produced. Jazz music. Economy on the upswing. They had their stressors but things were certainly looking better than the previous decade.

Until Black Tuesday in 1929. That was far more stressful than anything we have today.

Okay these are funny edit

They had more community and more certainties in their outlook on life than today. On the other hand if you were poor than life conditions were much harder than today. So I would say it depends on what class you belonged to.

There’s kids in America that read about news in a third world country and get depressed. The same kids wake up every morning with anxiety and panic attacks bevause they feel the shit the read about is happening all around them.

I work a demanding job and have a wife and 2 kids. It's stressful as hell. Especially since my wife, though I love her, just isn't built with the mindset I have. She doesn't have the drive or persistence to chase a goal and achieve it at all cost. She's not lazy at all, but with long term goals if the obstacles get too big she'll give up on them. So what that means is that the burden to provide is always solely on my shoulders. I guess that makes us no worse than a couple in the 50's except the difference is that the world was designed to operate on a single breadwinner and nowadays it takes dual income to really get ahead.

Back then was ignorantly blissful. Now we know the richest people on the planet pay employees min wage. Its a weird system we have<45>

They knew that shit back in the day too. People have been exploited by the rich since the beginning of time. Hell, America was built off of it.

They were most likely busier, however stress is what happens when you don't have time to do something you feel like you need to be doing, or think about something you feel like you need to be thinking about. Being busy isn't the same as being stressed, as stress is more emotional or cognitive uncertainty.

The world today is constantly switched on. Information overload, social media, politics, education, the meaning of life, everything is so needlessly complicated and it's difficult to unplug. In most ways we have it much easier, but in few others we have it worse. Without a doubt, as a society we are more stressed now.

I think it is. When a miss USA who had brains and beauty (she was a lawyer) decides to commit suicide instead of living this life then you know something is wrong in society.

For those who aren't aware she recently died and jumped to her death from her NYC apartment.
