There are no rules for this, its a made up belt, the UFC can create and vanish just the same, the UFC wont strip Aspinall, they will wait until Jones decides to retire to promote him to Undisputed without fighting.

Tom became interim champ November 11, 2023. That was almost 18 months ago, not 6 months. That's quite long enough, he needs to fight now or quit.

Contractually speaking they basically have to. They have to offer him fights and they don't want a lawsuit. He's the interim champion, and it's well established that being the undisputed champion is a cash cow for fighters.

If they tried to offer him a non-undisputed title fight (basically another interim title fight), he could technically sue them, citing loss of earning potential due to being denied an undisputed title fight. We've never really had this situation before. This is the exact reason why Dana gave even Belal a title shot, despite not liking him or his fighting style at all. The UFC don't want that lawsuit because they would lose, and losing a lawsuit could create precedent and bring the Ali Act to MMA.

So in practice they have to offer Aspinall undisputed title fights, and if they don't they then do have to pay him.

Aspinall knows that if Jones fight falls off and Jones retires that he has no one that will sell a card left at HW. Gane or Almeida are the only guys he hasn't beat yet in the division. Gane is looking like a Colby if he loses a 3rd titleshot and Almeida is more for hardcore fans. I really have no idea if he fought both guys within a span of a year who the UFC would have him to fight that's a new fight.
