Do you have to have long legs to work cross body rides?

I've had a lot of success with parallel leg rides, I can hold a guy down better and turn him more easily than without legs, for instance I do a half nelson tilt to one side, crossface the other side, then roll him through with a head and arm back to the other side to easily rack up 9 points in less than 30 seconds.

I've been interested in working on some of the cross body stuff like guillotines and pump handle tilts, but i've heard a lot that its meant for people who are more lanky, and i'm pretty short and stocky. Can anyone explain to me why that is? Should I not even bother learning that stuff?

its obviously easier for longer folks, but a good sense of balance is by far the most importaint trait, dont let it discourage you.

Can you give me an example by what you mean by balance?

its all about weight distribution, you dont want to hang too loose on the leg in side, else he can shuck you off, conversely, you dont want your weight too far over the other side, else he can switch into you, you have to be able to adjust on the fly to stay glued and react to his efforts.

you dont want to hang out cross body either, either holding on up top with a power half or wrist control, on holding on bottom for a banana split entry. in general, if youve got a good hold on him, he wont be able to dislodge you.

if you are too high up on him he can shuck you off that way aswell, in this case throwing your other leg back in and cutting his arms out from under him (if hes tripoding) is the goto move. if he tripods while you are in the single leg ride you dont necessarily have to imediately switch to double legs, a good rule of thumb is if you are cross body and dont have opposite side arm control or a half nelson, you want to either go for a banana split entry (if low), or throw your other leg back in (if high).

riding with both legs in is very secure and a good 'cure all' for a really explosive guy, ideally you want to have your hooks grapevined inside his inner thighs, else he can grab a foot and shuck you. when turning a power half from this position, make sure to take one leg out (essentially transitioning to a single leg ride) when preforming the maneuver, even if you put it back in afterwards, else he can twist with the powerhalf and turn into you onto your back.

Thanks that was really really informative!
