Just curious how many BJJ schools make you buy "Their" Gi and over charge. $150 for a basic white GIwith team patches seems steep for a A2. Am I the only one

Lots of associations do this, unfortunately.

Sadly it seems to be common practice in a lot of places.
I've also noticed a lot of gyms require visitors to wear a plain gi to include no branding, which to me seems a little ridiculous when you're just looking for some place to train when away from home.

This isn't too uncommon. I would have concerns if they only let you wear the school gi. You should be able to train in other gis if you're going a few times a week. Having a student buy three or more school uniforms is excessive in my opinion.

We do not have a team GI. Our gym asks that we wear a GI with their patch (patches are 15-25$) on it when competing, however. I don't think i would join a school that had mandated a team GI for rolling there; I have 4 GIs.. I don't need any more for the time being.

My school bangs us for a $160 gi and a $35 rash guard for no-gi class. They also want us to buy their grappling shorts, but they're more lenient with this so far.

That no branding thing is a but weird as well. A lot of gis come with a bunch of patches and stuff on them already. So we should buy a new gi with no patches to visit those gyms, seems a bit ridiculous.

Agree completely, though I need to correct myself it's not "a lot of gyms" I've noticed with that requirement. A lot of gyms say no affiliation patches on a visiting gi (which I don't agree with, but can understand); it was just one gym I remember seeing with that requirement of a all plain white gi. Can't remember which one it was I was looking at that said that though, but am trying to find it now.

They made one. No pressure though so no one ordered. LOL!

Would not accept being told I have to wear a team gi when training
would accept being forced to wear a team gi when competing
Might accept being forced to buy one team as a part of sign up. But not if I am signing up to a long term contract.
Would not accept being forced to sign a long term contract for bjj.

The gym I train at does none of the above.

They do sell gis. I brought one to support.
They do sell patches. I have a few on my gis.

I wear team patch with pride when competing most of the time.

One coach I trained with did require his students wear team gis, but did not impose this on visitors. I was a visitor. It did create a nice team atmosphere, and he was very kind to his poorer students. It felt okay to me, and I MIGHT accept it from him.

I've never had to do this, and I wouldn't unless I had no other (good) options.

I think it's bullshit to force someone to use school gi's. I have two gyms in my city, the other is an Alliance gym, they have to wear their Alliance gi in every competition. I just don't understand that shit.

My gym does have team affiliated rashguards, t-shirts, hoodies, spats and shorts, but they are completely optional. I usually buy them when they make an order, but it's because they are a whole lot cheaper than buying some un-affiliated stuff on my own. And it's nice to rep when it's not forced

My academy recently did up a custom team gi, but it wasn't mandatory to get one. Nonetheless at least half the students there did order one. Different experiences in different places...

You know to each his own especially if it's your business you're running but what eats my crawl is when you're out of town on business/vaca whatever and you call to see what the drop in/visit fee is and the gym owner tells you that you can't use a colored gi has to be a white gi... For the life of me I don't understand that one..
