Throughout most of my childhood I always found it odd that in most Christmas movies or holiday specials or stories that Rudolph isn’t shown or mentioned. To me though he was 100% real and at the head of the reindeer team that pulls Santa’s sleigh. It wasn’t until I grew up that I realized that he’s a copyrighted character that was only created about 80 years ago and he’s not in the public domain like other bits of Santa lore like Mrs. Claus and the other eight reindeer. As such he only shows up in licensed works that have permission to use him.

So what say you all? Is Rudolph canon or not? How many reindeer does Santa have? Eight or nine?

So how tf does Santa see where he's going if there's no Rudolph?

I thought the only reason they accepted Rudolph's special ass was because his nose is a headlight.

I'd say he's canon, kinda like Venom in Spiderman, added much later than the story started, but for sure canon.

The rest of the reindeers are probably pissed off about some Johnny come lately taking all their shine though.

He’s canon. The reindeer really didn’t have any fleshed out personalities of note from other major sources I could think of until Rudolph’s story came into play. I could be wrong on that but I feel like any time the reindeer are addressed in any fashion other than just “On Dasher, On Dancer, on Prancer...!” its within the context of a Rudolph story.

That said, the song brings back memories of kids in my elementary school obnoxiously adding in words at the end of each line. I’m not sure if this was a regional thing or what but I found it really annoying

Example

and if you ever saw it, you would even say it glowed (LIKE A LIGHTBULB)

All of the other reindeer used to laugh and call him names (LIKE PINOCCHIO)

they never let poor Rudolph join any reindeer games (LIKE MONOPOLY)

Uggh. I’m cringing thinking about it. I know this seems like small potatoes, but I like listening to Christmas music during this time of year and if ever that song comes on, I inevitably hear those added comments in my mind afterwards because it was such a common thing when we would sing holiday songs in music class as kids.

Rudolph is a johnny come lately, a new kid on the block, a skinny cat on the come up, a flashy prospect, we’ll see if he lasts
Exactly, he’s a prospect. What reindeer in the Top 15 has he even beaten? I’d like to see him beat a couple of ranked reindeer before I get on the hype train.

He’s got a natural physical gift like Condit’s chin or Hendo’s power. It might not get him to champ status but it will carry him to the top tier.

I think you could be right, but how’s his ground game? He does have that one sub over Blitzen, but let’s be honest: post-USADA Blitzen is a shell of his former self. I’m not accusing him of PEDs or anything, I’m just saying...

haha

true. Plus Blitzen was always a front runner. If he didn’t shellack his opponent in the first round, he would struggle with the adversity and gas down the stretch.

Match him up against someone with cardio and Frankie Edgar-esque footwork like Prancer and then see how he does.
