If you were a naysayer, have you changed your mind? Many were saying Khabib can't stand with gaethje and it would be suicide to do so, but not only did he stand, he arguably won the stand up battle. Have you changed your mind? Is his standup effective?

Always believed ever since the Al fight. That was an eye-opener and Rogan was an idiot for criticizing him.

I believe that he outstruck Justin and simply took him by surprise with that approach and pressure in doing so. Justin looked like a deer in the headlights for most of the fight.

With that said if he fought Conor like this he would have gotten pieced up badly and forced into his bread and butter; Khabib’s greatest weapon is his threat of a takedown and he pretty much stood and banged with Justin the first round. If he were to have a striking match where the takedown wasn’t even being feinted and he was just striking then the superior striker should win in most instances.

Not at all. Gaethje's standup was very limited by takedown threat.

Always have. His striking is not pleasing to watch at all. But you can bet your ass that he is effective as hell and the constant takedown threat throws off better strikers than him. They look so lost... unbelievable. I was on the edge of my seat when he began to trade with Conor and Justin lol.

This is MMA. It doesnt matter WHY the standup works, only that it does. Khabib's striking improved dramatically in past several fights. Just more for his opp to worry about.

Khabib has excellent striking and striking defense for his specific MMA game. And thats totally different than general Kickboxing.

I always believed in it, but its grappling-striking so it can't be compared to Max Holloway or Nate Diaz. It's about never presenting a flat surface for a blow to land, having an awkward rhythm and footwork that is almost impossible to pin down, occasionally punishing with counterstrikes, and most importantly, constantly threatening the takedown. Without the TD threat, opponents would eventually find the holes in his stand up game or, even more likely, it'd be a boring match with neither fighter landing very hard.

And while we know Khabib hits hard, we don't know if he can knock out someone like Ferguson, Poirier, Gaethje, etc. standing (probably not), and he probably can't bury his opponent with sheer volume, either. His striking is inextricable from his grappling. It's rare to see Khabib plant his feet and blast someone, and it's a risk coach Javier is constantly admonishing him from taking.

Khabib has specialized striking. Punches and kicks that make sense for his style of fighting. He's not trying to look like a kick boxer or Muay Thai fighter. His striking is only useful to compliment his grappling.

Stop trying to limit striking to textbook aesthetics. If you understand the logic behind his striking, it all looks very solid.

It's decent but nothing spectacular for a top 5 GOAT. Jones, GSP, Anderson and Fedor all had better striking.

Jones' hands suck. But his standup is elite because how he mixes in that muythai kickboxing style.

Average striker, it’s the huge threat of the takedown that allows him to land shots.

Gaethje wasn't outstruck. Khabib pressured him well and walked through his shots but Gaethje landed more shots and heavier shots with the hands and feet.
