I think people need to suffer at some point in their lives to have a true appreciation of what riches that may bestow them. But I'm poor so what the fuck would I know.

I kind of feel like that is a line that the ruling class feeds the serving class to ennoble their degradations.

I think you can appreciate having more than other people by virtue of contrasting their shitty lives to yours, without having to have actually lived their shitty lives.
