There was an article posted many months back that documented what was going on behind the scenes. McGregor met Haymon as far back as a year ago, just a few days after the Aldo fight and the two agreed for the respective camps to engage in a public feud purely for publicity reasons. A few weeks later, Mayweather randomly brings up McGregor after previously ignoring him despite Conor's best efforts to gain his attention. And now it's dragged out throughout the entire year.

Mayweather gets to keep his name in the public eye before a possible return for his 50th fight and McGregor gets to have his name mentioned alongside his idol - a win win for both parties. They are not fighting under any ruleset, period. Conor could spend ten years training for Mayweather and he still wouldn't be competitive while Mayweather would be a solid favourite in MMA after ten weeks of takedown defence training and a few tae bo lessons.

Sounded good up until this point.

McGregor has more chance of winning a boxing match against Mayweather than Mayweather beating him in the cage.
