Like any sport, your legs are essential for success in MMA. With damaged knees you can’t run the same, you can be explosive to the same degree, your kicking can be diminished etc.
There are plenty examples of fighters not being the same following such injuries ie shogun or tony Ferguson.

Knowing this, is there any fighters who have returned from a major knee/leg injury and still performed as good as they once did. The closest example to this is Gsp who dominated the division after an ACL injury however he was less explosive than before. His success most likely is an outlier due to his unprecedented skill.

So any examples of fighters who came back from knee or leg injuries as good as they were before?

I knew Khabib was injury prone earlier in his ufc run but had no idea he damaged his knee so badly

Not nowadays with modern surgery unless you are poor. Old fighters never had those options so their bodies got ruined fast. Fedor had to stop grappling after his hands got ruined for example.

Shogun came back for a short 2nd prime after his multiple knee surgeries.

He might be the exception that proves the rule.

Interesting... do you think that having an injury of that magnitude could cause mental barriers that modern medicine can’t fix?

Shogun held the UFC title with no knees.

You can get around physical limitations if you are crafty enough.

It takes a year to recover from a full ACL tear, no matter how rich you are.

But more like a year and a half, because after 6 months of doing dick, 3 months of light work, and 3 months of medium work, it takes another 6+ months to actually get back to where you were.

And to recover timing fully, another 6 months.

2 years lost in your prime years is not nothing.

Look at guys like Conor and Shogun.

Unless their willing to do some peds their not going to consistently compete at the highest level anymore.

They certainly can. Many careers across all sports have been cut short due to knee injuries.

I think it was an LCL. But regardless, he could definitely be an exception to any rule lol

American Football star Jerey Rice famously came back from ACL surgery in 9 months....and re-tore it in the very first play back. That’s more typical.

Wierd. In pro sports max is under 9 months usually most often way faster. Where do you get info from?
