I had a physical assesment done yesterday. I am 5'8, 148 pounds and have 3% body fat. Is 3% too low? I read most athletes have between 5-10%. If this is an unhealthy percentage how would i put on a healthy amount of fat.

my diet consists of chicken, fish, lean beef, eggs, nuts, veggies, fruits, little dairy, oats, brown rice, wheat, grains, and flax. I never have fried foods, processed foods, or foods loaded with sugar.

Thanks for your help.

Your reading was most likely inaccurate. Regardless, you are smaller and probably weaker than the average man. If you'd like to be average or better you should eat more.

umm...i highly doubt that you have 3% B.F...i'm guessing you probably mis-read or they probably did a mistake..AND if it is true...that isnt healthy at all. you gotta have some fat on your body..

i am by no means weak, my bench press is 200 pounds. i didnt read anything. i had a test done.

Your reading is obviously off, even the most accurate measurements, such as the bod pod or underwater weighing are only accurate to within approx. 3%. So, at the least you probably have 5% which is indeed very low. But you should definitely increase your caloric intake with starchy carbs, protein and healhty fats such as nuts, fish and veg oils.

Here is your answer! Don't listen too any of these other guys (I am staring to think no one here has much experience in training) While yes 3% is low everyone is different, some people natuarly have low body fat it just means you have a better than average motabalism, my question is if you are really concerned with your BF% why are you eating so clean? Not saying that if you eat less clean you would have more body fat, but I would try eating some fattier foods. Thats not to say eat fats foods or anything like that, just put some higher fat in your diet. for example steak and eggs yogurt. after saying that if your training is still going good and you have lots of energy I wouldn't worry about it too much. And I will agree with some of the other stuff people have said, your BF % is probably around 5% wich is still really low.

All I have to say is: Oh Really?

YEP REALLY, I'm not sure if you were one of the guys responding to the thread but here's the facts. The guy is 18 years old and says 3% bodyfat (probably more like 4 or 5) the fact is some people just have low bodyfat and I did ask him why he was eating so clean if he was not happy with it. But as it is very uncommon to have that low of BF,if he feels fine and can train normally it's not dangerous to his health like some of the guys were saying, Rich Franklin goes into a fight at about 5% and when john lewis was fighting he was at about 3% it's how they're bodies react to the training they are doing, and to be honest I wish I could get down to that percentage (I fight at about 8%) but for me it's just not in the cards without almost killing myself.

3% is dangerous, i'd get a second opinion.

Chances are, if you are 3% body fat you will know it. Can you see the muscle striations, all of your abs, etc?

I imagine there was a screwup in the test, If you feel good keep doing what you are doing. If you are worried eat some more calories (fattier cuts of meat and more nuts would both be good places to start)

What does %bodyfat have anything to do with being trained? You're a fool if you think 3% is healthy.

Why is 3% unhealthy? The kid is 18 years old and bench presses 200lbs, how unhealthy can he be? I know guys with really low bodyfat and they are just fine. Again Rich franklin fights at 5% and john lewis use to fight at 3% are you telling me these guys are unhealthy? I will admit 3% is really low, but if the guy can still train and is lifting that heavy of weight how the fuck is he that unhealthy?

you state they Fight at 3%, not walking around daily at that low of a body weight. It's just like bodybuilders, none of them maintain their competition look for a long time. Using them as examples is innacurate.

Shonsy1 sucks. It is NOT healthy to be at 3% bodyfat. Everywhere I read, it states that the lowest healthy bodyfat to be walking around with is around 5%. I have always been under the impression that 3% is damn near kicking the bucket.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. This is a matter of science, not a matter of anecdotal evidence. If you have any idea what adipose tissue is used for and the body's requirements to maintain homestasis, you might think otherwise in this situation. It is possible for these people to have readings very low, but is dangerous because their body is in a constant need of energy. If you go too long with consuming energy, you will pass out, you body shuts down. You can even die.

There's a HUGE difference between 3%-5% bodyfat. I'd say 5% is okay, but 3%? I don't care if you're God and have 3%, it's unhealthy. Do your homework.
