Hey, do any of you guys use mma gloves as bag gloves? If so, which brand do you use?

Absolutely not, my friend. I use bag gloves for that. MMA gloves don't offer enough to protection/padding, I've found that you'll hurt yourself more using anything but good bag gloves.

You won't be able to hit as hard because they just don't have that much protection. Now one can argue that it is far more dangerous to punch a head, but you don't do it that many times in an MMA fight. If you land a few solid shots with 5 oz gloves, the other guy is going to be out of action.

On a heavy bag, you're going to be landing hundreds of power shots in a single session. Either you're superman and your hands have 5 years of supernatural conditioning or you're going to go easy on the bag. Even with thick 12 oz gloves, you can hurt your hands on a hard heavy bag if you hit it hard enough.

As far as gloves, I own a 12 oz and 16 oz Triumph United Heat Seekers with 1.75" of quality material padding. They're bad ass gloves that can be had for $55 when discounted at TitleMMA.

I had one week off to train during the summer, so I went apeshit on the heavy bag at the gym.
"These brand new 10oz. Cletos will save my hands!" I thought to myself.

It's been over a month and a half and my wrists are still sore. Not as bad as before (thank god) but it's pissing me off how long this has put me out of action. My sore knuckles have long since healed, but my wrists still hurt when I put pressure on my palm.

I shudder to think what would have happened if I'd done the same thing with the in-house gloves at the gym, which are probably 6~8oz. and have only a worn out elastic cuff for wrist protection.

A lot of people will probably disagree with what I'm going to say, but ah well... I often have a few rounds of hitting the bag bare fisted or with MMA gloves.

There are good points and bad points for using big gloves vs. MMA gloves (or hitting bareknuckle) on the bag. The obvious advantages for hitting the bag with big gloves are that you're at much less risk of injury, and you can bang the bag hard... But a lot of very skilled boxers break their hands and wrists in street fights.

Problems with using big gloves is that they make your hands and wrists lazy. You just can't make a solid fist with boxing gloves on, and the added support of the gloves on your wrists means you don't have to think much about keeping them straight. Because of this added support, you can bang your hands into the bag at whatever angle you like with the big gloves and probably not end up hurting your wrists. Obviously you can't do that with bare fists/MMA gloves. With bare fists/MMA gloves you have to learn to punch with proper technique. Punching without gloves is actually a little different technique to boxing (especially hook punches), that might be why a lot of you who have gone from gloved to bare fists/MMA gloves have ended up injuring yourselves. You have to be accurate, and you have to make sure you land with the right knuckles. A lot of boxing/muay thai trainers will tell you to land with your index and middle finger knuckles when actually you should be hitting with your middle, ring, and little finger knuckles, as these are the knuckles that are most in line with your wrist. If you don't believe me, do some press ups on your knuckles and see which knuckles feel the most natural. Not only that, you want the force spread out between the three knuckles. If you land on your middle knuckle with all of your force it will probably break.

When you're wearing big 16oz pillows on your hands you won't be thinking about any of this. You'll just be banging away at the bag with lazy hands and wrists.

Obviously you don't want to be going straight from banging the bag with gloves to hitting it without. That would be stupid. Start off light, focus on keeping the wrists straight, hitting with the bottom three knuckles and tensing your hand hard on impact. Then gradually hit harder.

when i ever have i hurt my hands real bad and my gloves wouldn't last to long sick with boxing gloves

I regularly use mma gloves on a bag to work accuracy. I dont hit as hard, to be sure but it is good to work on hitting specific small targets on the bag.

You're exactly the guy I was hoping to find when I made this post. Cheers man

I agree, the first time I did striking with MMA gloves I noticed I would hit with the middle join in the finger/the bottom part of a first (proximal interphalageal joint), and my wrist would buckle a few times. Hell, even when I shadow box sometimes, I keep my first like it is in 16oz gloves, and have to remember to make a fist.

I like to use MMA gloves when I'm doing a kick heavy bag session...

True bag gloves aren't vastly different then MMA gloves. Use some 108 hand wraps underneath and you should be fine.

I use bag goves most of the time... and I NEVER go bear fist.... you shuld NEVER go at the bag with out hand raps on.... no matter how "proper your angel" or what ever the impact of hitting the bag with nothing sporting your rist can damange them...... I am not going to say that useing just handwraps is a bad thing or a good thing... I have never done it.... but I do use handwraps and my mma striker gloves sometimes

I always wrap and tape my hands before I use MMA gloves, I figured everybody does the same?

Bag gloves dude are you fucking retarded?

You can not jump into a MMA fight without learning how to punch in MMA gloves. It would be like wearing wrestling shoes for all of your BJJ training, then taking them off the day of competition.

I understand all the safety issues with using mma gloves.

But consider this. I want to compete in mma. If I use bag gloves, I'll be hitting a squashable surface (the bag) with good protection and poor fist technique. Then I go into a fight using mma gloves (less protection then I'm used to) and I'm now hitting a hard surface (my opponents head) with my poor fist technique.

I use 14/16 oz bag/training gloves on the heavy bag but i don't see a problem with using mma gloves on the heavy bag. Just wrap your hands well and you'll be fine. MMA gloves aren't much smaller than the thin bag gloves that people have used for years in boxing gyms. These smaller gloves force you to strike the bag with the proper striking surface of your fist.

The wrap job is the most important part though.
