I did the Ancestry.com DNA thingy and it shattered our generations old belief that we had Muscogee blood. I'm officially 4% more "Great Britain" than natives of the area. Lol.

Anyone else into family history?

Ya, my mom did one of those tests a while back....I'm a bit of everything, so I guess I cant be racist against myself right??

So, my great, great, something-or-other fled to America after he killed a man in a duel. It was in the name of love.

I don't think i want to learn that that's bullshit.

This stuff is interesting. I got into it back in 06', around the time I got out of the service, it seemed to be the hip, trendy thing to do. I had to get 2 separate ones. One for paternal and one for maternal DNA. Costed about 400$ a pop at the time, but I am a very cultural person, always have been, so it was worth it. I can appreciate that people want to be in touch with their heritage and culture, it gives a sense of self and identity, if nothing else.

Both of my Mom and Dad's side of the family had Family tree books done in the 90's.Both studies went as far back as the 1600's. From what I've gathered I have French, Norwegian, Irish, and Native American blood in me. I've always been curious as to what one of those DNA Tests would say though.

how does the test work? don't you have to take a blood test to really figure out what your ancestry is?

They sent a tube thing that you fill with saliva. Just mail it in and a few weeks later, voila.

Here's what the results look like:image.png

now that i think about it, about four years ago i was at a party, and i started talking to this woman. she asked what my background was. i told her that i thought it was mainly spanish with some native indian blood. my parents are from mexico, by the way. she looked at me and said, "you also have german blood". i was like, "what? how do you know?". and the crazier part, was that she told me exactly the state in mexico my parents were from. it turned out that she was a sociologist that specialized in mexico-specifically. she started talking about facial structure, my nose, etc. i don't know if it's true, but this thread makes me want to find out for sure.

That's interesting, for sure. If you do Ancestry.com, they also have it all linked to their geneaology stuff. I've found a million cousins and all kinds of interesting stories.

I'm not calling you a liar, but i believe 0% of white Americans that say they're part native American. And i know so many of them. They all just throw it on as the last, impossible 1% of their make up.

I think our families just started making that shit up because of white guilt or getting to brag about being part indigenous.

I was sad to see no Native American, but the Iberian Peninula and Greek piece are very interesting.

"Black Irish" is supposed to be Irish with Spanish bits mixed in. Dark hair, etc.

I'll 1/8 kill you if you call me gay again!

I think it's because we have such a young culture in America that some of us desperately want to be part of something old school. That's pretty much my people anyway. The pictures of my ancient grandmother make it hard to understand though.

It comes from the Algonquin tribe. My Great Grandpa was 1/4 and the rest French Canadian which makes me 3% or so. There are actually a lot of people with Native American blood where I live in Upper Michigan.

A lot of people with French Canadian heritage have Native American blood in them. The Roman Catholic Church endorsed intermarriage with the Natives. The sect of Catholics who first arrived in Canada were called Jesuits. Their actual mission was to convert as many Natives as possible. A Native woman who married a Catholic man would get baptized, and probably baptize her children.
