I don't know that people are dumb, or even lazy. I think the overwhelming majority of Americans are exhausted. If someone were to take the high road, steel-man their opponent and attack THAT, AND provide quasi-plausible solutions to the problems, people would be flabbergasted and flock to that person, regardless of whether they were red or blue

Whomever gets voted in next is almost certainly going to have to deal with a recession/depression that makes 2008 look like a walk in the park, the party that's in power will be unelectable for the next 10-15 years unless the people are even dumber than I think they are, which I admit is entirely possible. If I'm on the Democrat side, I'm doing everything I can to throw the election and let the GOP take the hit.
