Dillashaws old samples being re-analysed (Garbrandt, Lineker, Assuncao bouts all negative)

Dillashaw vs Horiguchi RIZIN Fc would be the biggest fight in Japan in the last 10 years or so. Would watch. Hope he gets released if he gets banned for life

Dumb questions: Is each sample only good for one test or are the samples large enough to run multiple tests on? Follow up that, assuming a sample is only good for one test, is the logic for anti-doping to run test those samples first chance you get or to hold them as long as possible in the hopes of a better test being discovered/created?

samples are good enough for multiple samples.

To break it down. An athlete provides 90ml of urine (you might see fighters post the "90ml" logo on twitter, instagram etc)

60ml of that goes into the "a" sample, 30ml of it goes into the "b" sample

On arrival at the lab the "b" sample goes into storage

The "a" sample is then split again into two 30ml samples (call them a1/a2). The first half will be used for analysis, and they can run a pretty wide number of tests on that 30ml

If there is a positive test then the second half of the sample, the other 30ml can be used for confirmatory analysis - either using the same method or possibly another detection method - to confirm the positive.

This is not the same as the b-sample being tested, this is purely an in lab confirmatory analysis so when they report back to USADA they have double checked.

thats more than you asked, but to answer what you actually asked, yes, they can run a good number of tests on the original sample.

As far as storage for retroactive testing, it varies but for wada signatory sports the b-sample is frozen all the time, and they may on occasion freeze the remains of the a-sample if "a2" is not used for confirmatory analysis

For real. That's Dilladick in a nutshell right now.

?
maybe he only took EPO for the cejudo fight
Anything is possible.

But I find it tough to believe that Cody Garbrandt specifically said that TJ was taking EPO while at TAM, only for TJ to never have taken EPO until he fought Cejudo.

What about the Cody Garbrandt fight samples? If he had fails a EPO test for those fights he should be sued by Cody
I agree. Cody should 100% sue him if he's found to be using EPO in his old samples.

As @-Dim- has stressed EPO has a short detection window so even if he was using it may not get caught.
It's true. The detection window is less than 24 hours.

And red blood cells will live for ~100 days, so you can do a 2-4 week EPO cycle over a month before the fight and still be good.

Is this the first time USADA is testing samples from this far back in MMA?

the only times we know they have gone back is Frank Mir and Zubaira Tukhugov.

We know about those times because they had prior samples also test positive so it was announced.

They may have tested past samples from other fighters who popped, but the previous samples came up clean so we wouldnt know about it.

Dude, most of them are on it. They should just let them j-j-j-juice.
No. It's unnatural assistance. The very core philosophy of sports is to test natural human limits.

Why don't we let them wear robotic exoskeletons with sawblades and chainsaws?

Ok, but the problem is that right now there are multiple fighters that are still on it. So it's not fair that some use it and some don't. They will never catch all of them, how long it took them to start testing for EPO, it's a joke.

Shouldn't we then ban the use of all supplements? Perhaps even the use of man-made exercise equipment? We'll have fools climbing trees and benching eachother, 100% all natural baby!!! We also gotta get rid of gloves and mouth guards...what else...

If he tests positive for a fight say against Assuncao....would that also mean his bouts against Cody could be overturned if he doesn't test positive for the fights against Cody?
So cejudo-Moraes is a non-title fight

it's important to keep the illusion that the sport is clean.
