This might sound stupid but I was watching the BJJ episode of "Fight Quest" yesterday (which is a like a better version of the Human Weapon) and at the end of the episode the two fighters competed in a 2 round match against some random Brazilians.

Anyway Rickson was explaining the rules to the competitors and he said that takedowns and postions were all 1 point (no matter what position) and all submission attempts were 3 points! As weird as that sounds it seems like it would make for an exciting fight.

If someone took you down and got side mount they couldnt just lay and pray until the end of the match bc if you were able to throw up a submission you would beat them 3-2. It would totally change the pace and strategy of BJJ tournies. It would also teach the students of BJJ to not just look for position but to always be looking for submissions to cripple your attacker ASAP.

Anyway..........is this normal in Brazil? Do they have tournies like this? Or was this just for the show? Also what do you think about that scoring system?

this is ricksons own rules he started at the "budo challenge" couple years back, it was to eliminate stalling and emphasize on going to submissions. it actually worked as i watched the budo challenge and many of them didn't go the distance

I think it was just for a show, but Rickson has organized some tournaments called Rickson Gracie Budo Challenge, where rules was just like this, 1 for positions and 3 for sub attempt.

But the problem is what constitutes a sub attempt?? A half assed armbar from under side control?? A lose grip on the collar a choke attempt??

Thanks for the info guys...

Yea that leaves it even MORE subujective for the judges....I dont think a Brazilian would EVER lose a tourney if these rules where in place. :icon_chee

I got an advantage point in one tourney for a half assed triangle that I didnt even have my foot under the bend of my knee but not in the other when I actually had it locked down....so this WOULD pose as a major problem.

I dont like the rules, someone could just pull guard and throw up half hearted triangles and armbars and rack up points with little to no fear of losing due to getting passed.

I've heard of tournaments with submission attempt points and the way it was described to me was, well....

example: Your in my guard and I go for an armbar and you stack me while locking your arms down. Doesn't count. but if I can extend my hips and break your grip than it would count as a legit attempt even if you slip out of it.

A Triangle has to have the legs locked down and the arm across the body with head control.

A better way to describe it would not necesarilly be submission attempts but near submission points. Going for it doesn't mean anything but almost getting it means your really trying to finish him.

Very iffy and controversial though,
