Didn't last night actually further solidify Volk as #1 pound for pound.

Pound for pound has always meant if the fighters were the same size the better fighter is higher on the list.

Last night we watched a very outsized volk basically fight tooth and nail, tit for tat against a clearly bigger Islam... he lost... but it was damn close every round.

In my eyes that makes Islam the better fighter at the 155 lb limit... he is taller and even carried more muscle than Volk... Volk said himself when he got to a higher weight he felt slower... makes sense he is 5 ft 6....

Just my $.02.

Let me know your thoughts... or I guess flame me for my opinion if you want.

I agree, but p4p is dumb anyway, because if Volk was bigger he doesn't have the same cardio and speed, so you could argue a smaller Volk is actually the harder fight than a bigger one, unless you want to give him all same attributes but just make him bigger, but that's clearly not fair

Very outsized? No. Volk fought at the same weight class, and Islam won, making him the better p4p fighter. p4p doesn't distinguish how much a fighter weighed within the weight limit.

Pound for pound means nothing. You put Francis Ngannou in there 1 vs 2 against Islam and Volk at the same time and he destroys them both in less than 5 minutes. Weight divisions exist for a reason.

P4P is, at the core, a hypothetical ranking.

It just so happens that these guys were close enough in weight classes that they could fight. But if Bones defeats Gane then he could become #1, but Islam isn't going up to LHW or HW to defend the P4P ranking.

He showed at the very least he should remain above Islam in the P4P rankings.

Even with the large size discrepancy Volk was neck and neck with Islam.

If he was the same size or their sizes were flipped, Volk would handle Islam with relative ease.

That's the whole meaning of P4P. If everybody was the same size who's skillset would come out on top.

IMO it does, but P4P is nonsense to begin with outside of small side discussions and personal opinions.

I think the most important thing it proved was that Volk could definitely hang with the best LWs in the world and possibly take the strap on his best night.

Enough of this P4P nonsense, it never meant anything except as something to appeal to casuals. Ignore list.

Does make some sense

If Volk went up to MW & lost a close decision vs Poatan you’d think it should improve his standing

But going up just one weight class & losing to the #2 pfp and still being ranked higher than him just seems weird

More significant strikes landed, more total strikes landed, only 1 of the two that had a truly dominant rd and he looked a bit softer than normal. On the scorecards he lost but did he really lose?

That's not what p4p means Frank Mir

Yep... Bisping doesn't "get it" based on his comments post fight.... derp .

Agreed, I gave Volk no chance to get out of the 1st, he's for sure #1p4p with that performance, and arguably the best MMA fighter who ever lived.

The only reason Islam wasn't stopped is that time ran out... and his two most dominate rounds were just him holding and stalling.

You are correct, but p4p is a stupid concept anyway, and it doesn’t even have a completely agreed upon meaning, so don’t expect people to understand it.
