Watching it live, I thought Lawler won the first. but I remember reading a thread about Rory winning the first(the guys pic was a little kid with blonde hair) and arguably winning the fight based on points. So I rewatched it multiple times. I would have still given the fight to Robbie just based on the 3rd. The first kind of translated to how Rory done in the 2nd but Lawler circled and leg kicked early in the round and got 2 good punches near the end of the round. Rory dominated the 2nd on the feet and took Robbie down late in the 2nd. To be honest that round could have went either way, and if you rewatch it multiple times I would expect slightly more people would have given it to Rory. 10-10 would have been acceptable as well.

The first, Robbie lands a lot of hard kicks to the leg. Rory counters Lawler in the body with a front kick and lands a clean right hand to Lawler. Lawler lands a kick and Rory counters him with a jab. Lawler is a bit frustrated as Rory is getting the better of Lawler in the exchanges in the next few minutes. Lawler pushes the pace late as he realizes he's losing and corners Rory but Rory slides away from Lawlers punches. Rory lands a very clean jab. Then Rory catches Lawlers high kick and then Lawler lands 2 punches.

I noticed Rogan didn't pick up on a single jab that Rory landed cleanly, and the reason Rory might have lost that round is his strikes don't look like crowd pleasers.

Rory later on becomes more active and wins the 2nd round on the feet and takes Lawler down.

3rd round, Lawler clips Rory few seconds just early in the 3rd round and it goes downhill for Rory there. Rory manages to get top position very late and lands elbows.

Imo, Lawler is the man to beat in the WW division, after the fight he hurt Hendricks bad and destroyed Ellenberger. I think Lawler, Hendricks, Rory are the top 3. And Hendricks and Rory seem like the only guys being able to beat Lawler.

meh it was close - late flurry in the round prob won it for robbie but there was no conclusive winner - would be fine with 10-10

While the first round was competitive, it should belong to Lawler.

So yeah, 1st and 3rd to Lawler, 2nd to Rory.

This is why 10-9 system sucks, Robbie clearly won that fight but yet it's not impossible to score it for Rory.

I thought Rory won that round. No one was reacting to the front kicks to the body or punches Rory was landing. Robbie was feinting and circling but Rory was outiming Robbie and landing front kicks to the body and high kicks to the forearm and hit him clean with his punches. Most of robbies output was just the low kick and the late flurry Rory caught the kick and robbie landed 2 punches which imo shouldnt have won the round

TLDR... Lawler won

/thread

People that think Rory won that fight or it was even really close are part of whats hurting MMA. This whole "yeah it looked like Robbie won but if you look at it in this weird way and total the points like this" outlook hurts the sport. The guy that clearly won in obvious fashion should get the win. How can the sport hope to attract new fans when clear winners lose because of bullshit point fighting. Every time bad decisions happen it turns potential fans away. (Like Shogun Machida I with my dad)

Rory has more of a case for winning the first than the second IMO but Robbie still beat him 29-28.

No one thinks Rory won, but he did win round 1 closely(he landed a lot of body kicks and the jabs were hard to see but he landed them really clean and dominated round 2 but got destroyed by Lawler in round 3. Round 3 tops Rory's round 2 and round 1 was close.

Really? Everyone thought Rory won round 2 that round is pretty definitive imo. Rory was getting the better of the exchanges and took him down with real good gnp. but Lawler won the fight

It wouldn't be so bad if the judges were more willing to use 10-10s and 10-8s. In this case the first would be a 10-10, the second a 10-9 for Rory, and the third a 10-8 for Robbie.

I agree. GSP vs Hendricks is a very good example of this. There is a fairly strong argument that GSP won at least three rounds but who cares? He got his ass kicked.

Agreed.

If jabbing into a guys hand is valued highly then yes Rory won but if value actually landing clean strikes Robbie obviously won.
