Did people seriously expect 5'8 wrestler Yoel Romero to charge in to 6'4 counterstriker Izzy?

Yoel would have been flattened. Its never a good idea to start chasing Izzy look at Whitaker and Costa.

Yoel is not a striker like Gastelum.

Izzy knew this and made the fight boring refusing to engage only looking to counter.

Yoel still won that fight regardless of how boring it was.

Given Yoels speed and power, charging in was his best chance. Yeah he'd run the risk of getting KO'd but he lost anyway just standing there.

I don't know, Yoel clearly could have done more. But really Izzy could have too. I felt Yoel was more willing to engage than Izzy in that fight but in the end it was just a boring stalemate.

yeah werdum did and got ktfo

Calling yoel a wrestler is a stretch lol

sure he is a wrestler, but in mma he has largely been a striker who uses his wrestling defensively aside from a couple fights early in his ufc career.

also, yes it is up to the shorter man to close the distance lol you must be new to this

Many people here don't care about the process, only the outcome.

Pushing the issue was his best chance, however slim it might have been. He allowed Izzy to win while having the easiest, most damage free night possible.

It's not a good idea, but he's challenging for the belt, he should be the one to go for it... Adesanya can do nothing and still retain the belt via Draw.

Yoel is just an extremely overrated fighter and people had way too many expectations.

Yoel is 40+ years of age and has lost multiple times. He was not at all as scary or good as people believed.
How was he not as good as people believed he only lost to dec by the best and they were all close. Next time know what your talking about.

Yoel is good at knocking people out but shit at winning decisions. Just avoid his counter and you win because he gives away rounds via having zero output.

He never makes adjustments or has a back up plan— terrible fight IQ. Overrated

Shit at winning decisions? Almost every decision loss he's been in was close and controversial at the highest level of mma.

TBF Yoel did good, but he should have pushed the pace more in 4th and 5th, when it wasn't working.

If he got the finish with one of those scary counters, people would be saying it's a classic Romero finish, lull the opponent in and explode, but if he doesn't get it, then it looks terrible.

I think in theory his plan was good, but he didn't have enough urgency when it wasn't working out. Maybe he just couldn't go as hard too, he looks like a tank, but he is old and has many injuries. Also, Israel is not exactly an easy guy to catch
