Depp was on top then.

In the 2000s, he was in the films Chocolat (2000), Blow (2001), From Hell (2001), Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003), Finding Neverland (2004), Secret Window (2004), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), and Public Enemies (2009). He plays Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean series, starting with 2003's The Curse of the Black Pearl. For his roles in The Curse of the Black Pearl, Finding Neverland, and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Depp was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor.

In 2010, Depp was cast as the Mad Hatter
Meh, I love Depp, but that ain't cutting it.
Off the top of my head I think Dicaprio's run in the 2000's shits all over Bales.
So far this looks like his stiffest competition, but the TS is cutting it off at 2009.
  • 2000/I The Beach
  • 2001 Don's Plum
  • 2002 Gangs of New York
  • 2002 Catch Me If You Can
  • 2004 The Aviator
  • 2006 The Departed
  • 2006 Blood Diamond
  • 2008 Body of Lies
  • 2008 Revolutionary Road

I don't know how much being the lead actor is emphasized, here. Bale is the lead actor in almost every film in the OP, and is a marquee billing (or at least a movie poster billing) in every one. I suppose "marquee billing" doesn't really mean anything, anymore, doesn't seem like any of them do that, nowadays.

I thought Tom Hardy would be more competitive, but his 2000's filmography was a bit thinner than I thought it would be. Same for Gary Oldman. Samuel L. was damn busy, but if I restrict to marquee castings only, it's definitely not his best decade. DDL & Kevin Spacey weren't busy enough. Wahlberg was all over the place, but not a serious competitor.

Not a complete list of worthy candidates, but for the forum's consideration:

Looking at stuff I actually enjoy Saint Nick does quite well despite the amount of crap he was in.

Adaptation
Matchstick Men
The Lord of War
Bad Lieutenant
Kickass

Yea bale was my third favorite character in that movie

It’s that way in the entire dark knight trilogy. Scarecrow and Bane were both more fun to watch than Bale as Batman. The villains were the real stars

also, fixed my crazy auto correct

A lot of great choices in this thread, but I got Denzel winning

Jack Sparrow > Batman
<DisgustingHHH> they actually cut Keith Richards a check to be his dad so it could be meta to millenials.

Turns out that shit was tacky as hell, to anyone with any taste in film.

If they only made one movie I would consider it but after all the sequels no way bro, pure schlock.

I'll take Bale and his Nick Nolte whisper voice all day 24/7, which actually got a little better by Dark Knight Rises

I'd go with Leo even though his oscar role was far from his best performance
