I am planning to enrol to some formal BJJ class when i return back to England after Christmas so I bought a cheap ass 20 dollars judo gi (there is not any place in my country that sell bjj gear, and i don't have enough money for a proper bjj gi anyway). My question is that have anybody in the forum ever try to cut a judo gi into a bjj gi? Is it a bad idea or not?

I've never done this personally but I do know some people that do something similar with success. If you ever had a great fitting pair of jeans that are just about needing replacement, cut all the seams and flatten it out to use as a stencil. This way when you buy new jeans, you can get the new ones cut to fit perfectly like your old ones. I'd imagine its a similar process with your project. Unfortunately you're going to have to mutilate a great fitting BJJ gi.

I wouldn't say its a bad idea per se but the amount of time and work involved and the fact that you have to destroy a BJJ gi for a stencil doesn't seem to weigh out the results. You're better off just getting something like a Fuji gi for $69 unless you're just itching for a new DIY project out of mere curiosity.

well i don't even have a bjj gi to begin with. I guessing that i could use some sizing informations on various websites like tatami fightwear or venum and cut the gi based on those informations. Another problem then arises: i have never purchase any gi based on the normal A1 A2 etc.... type of sizing, so it just add more to my problems. FYI, i'm about 182 centimetre (6 feet probably)

I could help you with sizes if thats what you're having trouble with. Standard Karate/TKD/Judo gi sizes generally convert to BJJ sizes as follows:

Size 2 = A0
Size 3 = A1
Size 4 = A2
Size 5 = A3
Size 6 = A4
Size 7 = A5

When I first started BJJ, I had a size 5 Judo Gi that fit alright. When I picked up my first BJJ gi I got an A3 which fit great. BJJ gis are cut slimmer than Judo gis which are more boxy but otherwise the lengths of the sleeves, pant legs and jacket skirt were just fine.

hmm.....thank for your inputs. I guess i could abandon this project and enrol bjj class with this judo gi. Better watch out for those collar choke in the future then :icon_lol:

Lately I've been preferring using my judogi in BJJ despite there being more material to grip. Since I'm a white belt, mostly rolling in sparring with other white belts these little details don't really play a huge factor but are still relevant.

the main issue you're going to notice is in the sleeves/rib area and gripping it will be easier. However, as has been brought up before, if you are using techniqua and breaking grips properly, it shouldn't be a huge issue.

I myself preferr BJJ gis since they're more tailored and seem to breath better (with one exception)

yea, also when i roll bjj with a judo gi, i'm usually more worried about the big amount of sleeve opening than collar chokes. i thought about getting the sleeves tapered from the armpit to the wrist by a tailor, but i just decided to get a bjj gi instead

I never have but a friend of mine did have his judo gi altered to make it fit better and they fuked it all up. He was furious. Im telling you this to save you the aggravation he went through. Put the gi on ebay. See if you can get any money for it, and start saving for a gi you can use for your bjj.

There ARE people who wear judo gi's for bjj, just not many, infact i know someone who always wears a mizuno, its not a bigggggg deal really, just wear your judo gi until you can afford a bjj gi
