    - Orginating in Mink farms fromDenmark
    - A mutated coronavirus has jumped from Minks to humans.
    - Since June, 214 people infected with Mink versions of coronavirus. 12 have the new mutated version
    - Denmark culls entire Mink herd, around 17 million
    - Not found to be more deadly than mainstream Covid-19 variants, but shows a weak reaction to antibodies so potentially a vaccine would be less effective.
-WHO says be cautious but too early to get carried away with panic. Denmark says we rather go overboard than not do enough.

    ---

Tyra Krause, a senior public health specialist at Denmark's State Serum Institute, the authority that identified the mutated strain, said although more research was needed, early lab results found "this variant showed less sensitivity" to antibodies, which could make a potential vaccine "less effective."

In a report published Wednesday, the institute said tests showed the new strain had mutations on its so-called spike protein, which invades and infects healthy cells. That poses a risk to future Covid-19 vaccines, which are based on disabling the spike protein, it said.

I mean a permanent ban on Mink farming. So no resumption of Mink farming after the virus goes away.

    Yeah I know. Just kidding.
Don't know if I agree though. In a perfect world I guess we'd be better off without mink farming, but my understanding is mink farming is a pretty big part of the economy in Denmark. And in regions where it is harder to create new jobs. I'd hate to seem them kick another leg out from under the farmers.

I read that Denmark is the world's largest supplier of Mink pellets. When Toyota closed down its factory in Australia, they funded for the retraining of their staff with other skills so that they could find other jobs. Denmark can provide funding and training for Mink farmers to do other things.

They could, but it would be expensive. Danish economy isn't quite like Australia's either (there are fewer jobs on the unskilled end of the spectrum, and less diversified economy in general), and again, not only would you need to retrain a large part of the population (which would take time), you'd also need to relocate them. Not to mention that factory workers don't have their life's savings invested in a business the way mink farmers often have.

Side note: Sweden tried large-scale retraining programs when the shipping industry went belly up in the 1980's. Sure it helped cushion the effect for a lot of people, but it cost a fortune and most workers ended up being paid for early retirement rather than reeducated anyway. Experience (at least from nordic countries) shows that people can't just be moved from one sector to another like cargo units. If you can keep a sector of the enonomy viable, it is best to do so.

    If so its not Covid-19.
