He then throws a strike to the body before it's broken up. Shouldn't have broken them up imo. Maia listened to the ref and started throwing shots. Bad timing on the ref's part.
I don't know if it is pretending. Hard to take the back or drag a wrestler like Usman down. Usman's whizzer was strong and enough to stall out. That was still bullshit for the ref to break it up there. He took away Maia's opportunity.
Watching MMA for many years and I see the whole "break people up" & "stand people up" is never applied consistently. I understand it's pretty difficult to do this, but differences between the timing of doing so are huge.
I remember a recent Bellator fight where Big John himself was explaining why the ref didn't break/stand the fighters up and during this explanation the ref actually did break them up
I agree that this positions should have NOT be broken, Maia had Usman's right arm trapped and was moving towards his back. When the ref shouted "break" Maia tried to discuss, but the thing just went on.
Really bad call by the ref just because a couple of morons were booing from the stands.
The ref should consider what each fighter is doing, not the morons booing.
