And at a Q&A ahead of a recent UFC event in Salt Lake City, Johnson was very blunt about the ABC's proposed change to a rule about knees to a grounded opponent in the Unified Rules of MMA.

Those rules hurt shogun, overeem, fedor.. From the ring to the cage... The point of MMA is to mimick a real fight.. Not limit...The long first round... Not using the fence as a crutch....And gives less skilled but more athletic people an advantage.... Instead of having to control the center of the ring like you do in boxing....More people get cut / injured with elbows than kicks to the head...That just looked too graphic.. In a time when the UFC was desperate to get television coverage and public acceptance... At this point of their success.. The rules could be negotiated.. With the addition of females.. Probably won't ever happen.. Putting people in a cage makes them look more primitive than in a ring.....The ring has a more inviting feel.

Yeah, you hear promoters like Dana always talking about exciting fights. Pride rules make it harder to stall, IMO.
