Ok, so it's fine if you are a fighter who doesn't have the best ability to take a punch. It's even possible if you have a particularly weak chin if you have a style that keeps your head out of trouble.

I don't understand why a veteran like Struve would have so little head movement and so little defensive footwork - as in circling out, lateral movement - anything to create distance instead of standing still and covering up and hoping that will defend you from all the attacks thrown.

I don't know why he fights at such close range and why he doesn't use his long range tools more, but that's something else.

Why would you know you, if you know you have a weak chin, dedicate yourself to a style of getting in close and covering up if you take shots and trying to wait out the storm in order to reset?

It's frustrating to watch.

Hunto beat what little fight I.Q. he had out of him. He engaged in a pace setting gameplan and when it was failing him, he just kept at it. Then his normal downfalls were exposed.

Yeah, too tall to have good footwork. I don't know about the head movement, but not many mma fighters have this, unlike boxers.

He's too tall, not a good frame for fighting cuz he can barely move
The way he seems to labour to lift his legs I wonder if you're right.

He moves like he only has feeling in the core 50% of his body and his limbs, especially his legs, are tossed out like softballs.

He just doesn't have the talent for it.

Also being that tall is generally not good for athletics.

But you'd expect his team to identify his obvious weaknesses. If he's really too tall to move around then he has to retire. If he can learn to move in there he can do 3x as well as he's done by plodding and taking shots to engage.

Ok, even basic footwork, like slow lateral movement or circling out. He doesn't seem to have any idea that he doesn't have to just stand there and eat punches.

This isn't even bad footwork. It's a seeming ignorance of the possibility of footwork.

I can't understand that.

Def doesn't have the talent, but damn... it's a bit frustrating to watch. He looks like the definition of Conor's "stuck in the mud".

Dude he went life and death with Christian morecraft and got dropped by Paul buentello

It's not breaking news that Struve can't fight

Yeah, I can't explain. Bad coaches, I don't know. Very bad IQ fight.

Still, he is in UFC since 2009 and had a good record (due to his height?). And he fought good to very good fighters. Stipe, Reem, JDS, Hunt, Browne, Nog, Nelson.

His jaw was severely broken it's amazing he has any chin left.

I guess I just expected him to come back with something more modern looking. My bad.

Oh I've been there bro, the worst was when Travis Browne executed him, i told everyone on here that Struve would 'use his reach' and knock this sloppy fool out
Uhhh

True. All the more reason why I expect more from him today, given fighters' growing understanding the possibilities of footwork, than what he's showing. It just seems so obvious, given his history in fights, that this isn't going to be successful style as skills evolve. But whatever...

Yup, he has virtually no head movement, he has always been like that and never changed. Its a huge flaw. His no head movement is a much bigger problem than him not using his reach.

Struve is pretty good on the ground and actually has some very good subs, but the problem is he never really tries to take anyone down, I know it might be hard to shoot takedowns at 7 foot, but he should try trips from the clinch or at least try and drag them down when clinched up, but he never attempts it.

Ok, I'm just one step behind you. This stylistic approach was bizarre for me to see in 2017 as a main event.

I can't say I saw any evidence that he was even considering going to the ground across the rounds of this fight. Did you?

It's like he has to prove to himself that the style of plodding and tossing a bent limb and standing still when hit can work. It's like he's on a mission to prove this can do it.

No he doesn't even attempt to go to the ground anymore, which I don't understand because early in his career most of his wins were by submission, especially rear naked chokes and triangle chokes.. but last 3 or more years he just wants to do sloppy striking.

He should fight someone like Oleksiy Oliynyk next, so at least he may have to be forced to go on the ground. instead of this sloppy striking.
