The purpose of this writing is to help define the Carlson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu style as compared to Helio Gracie’s approach. As an experienced jiu-jitsu student from both schools on thought, I would like to express my observations of Carlson’s approach and Helio’s. Both styles influence my teaching methods to this day and at the end of this analysis, I would like to pick a couple of historic jiu-jitsu fighters that are the best representatives of the Carlson Gracie style.

Thanks for that! Unfortunately, I moved to an area with no Carlson schools, but the Carlson style truly is unique that translates very well to mma. 2 current ufc champions are of Carlson Gracie lineage.

I copied this from another Carlson Sr black belt of the 9 typical characteristics from Carlson's black belts:

1. Prefers to fight on top and has a crushing top game.
2. Dangerous guard, but not necessarily one's go to game.
3. Devastating knee on the belly.
4. Good judo (you've seen those uchi matas Carlson hit on Santana).
5. Deadly kimura and cross chokes.
6. Well rounded game that transitions well to vale tudo.
7. Excellent self-defense.
8. Extremely aggressive and confident.
9. No fear.

Other lineages are more counter attack, survive first and then attack. I believe Carlson's style was that you create the opportunities first, thus their infamous aggressiveness.

Pressure passing!
Strong basics no frills like novocain give it time and youll get desired results

OSS!

As you can see by my sig, I am a huge Carlson fan, and though I never got the chance to meet him, I have attending one of Junior's seminars.

I don't train at a Carlson affiliate, but all my previous instructors have Carlson in their lineage and I try to implement the Carlson style in my game.

I think the biggest misconception about Carlson is that his guys weren't technical. You can just look at De La Riva and Liborio and know that's not true.

I think Helio's philosophy has an important place in jiujitsu, but I think when it comes to MMA and self-defense, Carlson's philosophy is more realistic.

War Carlson!

It is pretty accurate.

This one is true, I remember him screaming to a young Vitor during an old UFC match.

Joelho na barriga Vitor !

I have a question for anyone that would know more about this. I just started bjj in August of 13 and it would be under Helio's side. I am not a flexible person but always been a good athlete in different sports. I feel the top game will become more me in the future just by what my physical traits are. Do you believe that will be no problem who I am under but more on what I personally focus on? Hopefully not a stupid question but thought i would ask.

I'd think what would be more important is what you focus on
