Please help me with the following senarios for Muay Thai

a) Step jab: Opponent throws a step jab. I've been told to counter 3 ways, either
-when he steps in, step both feet back quickly, then step in and counter.
- when he steps in, set your rear foot back slightly and lean your head back
-when he steps in, move your head away

I feel slightly comfortable the first way, i'd just like to know if its correct, because for the last two, ive worried about getting fucked by the cross.
Also, when i use the first method of defense, the time that it takes me to get back into striking distance, from the time that i got out, makes it hard to counter.
help?

Should I back step towards the right instead? assuming we're both orthodox.

It's not like those are your only options, right? Why not add in a block to one or all of those?

Your first one sounds more like it's suited for boxing but the last to sound ok
try not to get in the habit of just moving back try moving to the side also it opens up good angels for kicks.

but there are dozens of good counter combos

try this one

he steps in you perry the jab down with your left while circiling to the left and and throw a right hook

he steps with the jab slip your head to the right bring your left guard high then throw an uppercut or hook to the body then hook to the head

I'm a 6'3" south paw muay thai fighter. Not your typical opponent, but I can tell you what works against me. I use the jab to keep my distance, but most often get hit when they see it coming and slip to the left and throw an overhand right. Knowing this I sometimes fake a jab and come in with a left cross that catches pretty flush if their right is in the air for the overhand.

i prefer to parry the jab with my right hand and fire back with my jab. THe jab comes out the instant you parry the jab.

you can also slip the jab and counter with your own jab

Im a taller fighter, so i hate to give advice to you short guys trying to hit me :)

The first question you should ask yourself is..is this guy just taller or taller and stronger? If you are stronger you can start reaching with inside left leg kick (with your lead leg). Youll miss it at first but the point is to get him thinking about it a couple of times on your 3rd or 4th try you kick and follow your step all the way in, guard up and go straight to the body. Youre now inside and he will back up to keep range. you can tag him as he is backpedaling

Risky but effective. Youre welcome

Watch Tyson and to a lesser extent, Couture.

It's tough getting inside, but once a smaller guy get's inside, he can do some serious damage.
