Massive Pentagon agency lost track of hundreds of millions of dollars

https://www.politico.com/story/2018/02/05/pentagon-logistics-agency-review-funds-322860

"One of the Pentagon’s largest agencies can't account for hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of spending, a leading accounting firm says in an internal audit obtained by POLITICO that arrives just as President Donald Trump is proposing a boost in the military budget."

"The audit raises new questions about whether the Defense Department can responsibly manage its $700 billion annual budget — let alone the additional billions that Trump plans to propose this month. The department has never undergone a full audit despite a congressional mandate — and to some lawmakers, the messy state of the Defense Logistics Agency's books indicates one may never even be possible."

So basically the books at the Defense Department are so sloppy that hundreds of millions of dollars are being spent on who knows what and there is next to no oversight. I think most people tend to agree that government waste is shitty but there is always a deafening silence/acceptance when it comes to waste in regard to the military and defense.

So why is there no concerted effort to crack down on this despite this pretty damning evidence?

Member when we pumped the defense budget to cold war levels like a month ago?

I member.

God damn. That’s like 1/70th of a high speed rail train they lost.

Remember the Navy has like $750 hammers they buy.

Yeah, by Pentagon standards 800 million isn't even a blip. We probably spend that much on truckballs for our Humvees.

Dat swamp drain doe!

they didnt 'lose track'. Dark money for subversive operations needs a slush fund. Defense spending is a great method for that since nobody ever expects the money to actually produce anything.

meanwhile VA hospitals go underfunded.

With the number of times military assets go on and off of different accounts, and the number of systems used at the operational level, it is not a wonder at all that the books are in abominable shape.

lol well i guess it went down the swamp drain

5% of that on some decent accountants would probably save that much every year, that and stop buying 1000 dollar hammers..

No big deal. Not like we would have provided poor people with healthcare or college educations with that money anyway.

This is just one agency in the department of defense. It's one of the largest but by no means is it the only one that is massively inefficient.

Check out this article linked off of the first one I posted.

How do you buy $7 billion of stuff you don't need?

"The GAO, the oversight arm of Congress, has repeatedly flagged systemic management problems at the agency. The congressional watchdog found in 2010 that "the average annual value of the inventory for the 3 years reviewed was about $13.7 billion. Of this total, about $7.1 billion (52 percent) was beyond the amount needed to meet the requirements objective."

Damn, that’s almost 1/10th the cost of a high speed rail train.
