Today : [NHB/MMA History]
The Evolution of Submission Defence/Grappling since Early Pancrase/Rings.
MYTH: Submission Defence today is much better than what it used to be because fighters, 'suddenly', started training to defend them. It is the so-called 'evolution', which means current level of grappling would be much higher than it was some 15-20 years ago. Ol´School Fighters were clueless when it came to defend submissions.
This is indeed a myth... Especially concerning the armbar.
[Note: the fighters who went through the Early Pancrase experience, and even the Rings one, were much more knowledgeable about leglocks than the current generation, I believe everybody will agree on this]
Consider the recent Volkov example:
Some people claimed that Volkov neutralized Doom´s guard...
Werdum was/is completely washed out in this fight, he might even be done, too old.
His transitions in this fight were so lousy, so slow... But.. Volkov was completely clueless during these transitions on the ground!
Watch the fight again, but pay only attention to Volkov´s face and hips on the ground during these transitions, especially those when Doom had briefly his back or his knee... Volkov keeps looking left and right to guess what to do...
Much more: during Doom´s [lousy and so slow] transition to armbar, he got out of it, sure pretty easily, but he neither anticipated it nor guessed it, and his reaction was like 1 second late...
As a matter of fact, 2 things were exposed on the ground:
1> Volkov is still a rookie
2> Doom is done.
Now, compare Volkov´s time reaction [1 sec] to the slow & lousy armbar attempt, with these ol´school fighters´ quick anticipation and unreal defence:
a) Fedor vs Kerry Schall
Kerry Schall was a wrestler, nothing of a submission artist or a catch wrestler, and the Fedor fight was his 8th MMA fight (7th for Fedor). Fedor was in his physical prime, quick in his transitions [much quicker than Doom]
Check Kerry´s reaction to Fedor´s submissions´attempts:
