Hey Sherdog. I have a bit of a problem; So I'm thinking about joining a club that a friend is trying to refer me to.

The thing is the pricing at this one club goes something like this:

I pay around $140 a month for these 'Gracie Fundamentals' Class. These classes run every day between 6-7 or 6-8; however, there are also classes that are 'advanced/apex' that only members who pay extra have access too that happen after these classes.

I believe it will run around $160 a month to have access to these 'advanced' classes. Finally, they make you sign a one year contract with a registration fee.

This all probably sounds shady for the club, but the head instructor is great and seems to have a legit lineage

The 2nd club I'm looking at

The head instructor looks to have a lower rank than the other one, but does it really matter much? Also, the pricing at Greenwood sounds great. It's around $100 a month with no contract or registration fee. The club is also a Checkmat affiliate

I'm stuck in choosing, I can use some opinions! :D

Take into account some other factors as well.

-Which is closer to you?
-Is the vibe of these places good for you? In other words, do you feel like it is a good place for you according to your goals.

The contract thing seems a bit shady, but that is something that is often seen in BJJ schools.

Try out the schools and see which is better for you. No sense in going to a cheaper school that you don't fit into.

I would try out both school and see which one fits best for you. Btw, ranks above black belt are generally given for time and are not related to skill. I wouldn't put too much weight into this. Chris Greenwood is very legitimate and has a lot of competition experience.

Being in Toronto, you have a lot of schools to choose from and a lot give free trials. I would try out as many as possible if I was in your shoes.

I would easily pick Green wood bjj....

I wont pay 160 just based on principle. You can go to gyms with over 20 hours of class time a week in Toronto and not have to pay that much... That is just non sense. Such a rip off... Even gyms DT Toronto don't charge close to that... 140 a month so you can commute all the way to the gym and do one hour of fundamentals? are you serious? The advanced class should be reserved for those who have advanced skills, no the ones who can spare more coin... The commute to and from the gym would be longer than the class time at 1 hour a day... what a joke...

Then again, maybe I woke up on the wrong side of the bed....

Yay 1st post!

Where are you located? Bravado and Greenwood are no where near each other. Considering the distance there are plenty of places to train. Ascension bjj, Kombat Arts, Toronto Bjj, Toronto nogi, Primal mma, Action reaction mma, Body of Four. All fantastic schools. (Definitely missing a bunch more)

There is plenty of quality training to be had at not ludicrous prices.

Unless you are set on picking between Bravado and Greenwood, pick Greenwood (no I don't train there so no bias). If not, then travel around and visit some of the academies I mentioned.

Happy hunting.

I have a friend that trains at Greenwood. Smaller classes. They just got influx of whitebelts which is cool.

Any questions that you may have I can pass them along and relay back to you.

The Gracie Woodbridge club is about 20 minutes away, while Greenwood is closer to 30 minutes. I would definitely go to the Woodbridge club, but the pricing model and contract worries me.

Sure, much appreciated.

How do the no-gi classes work? The schedule on the site does not differentiate between no-gi and gi.

The pricing model, is what I said correct? Is he able to provide an exact figure for me?

Thanks!
