WOW, I did burpies for the first time yesterday. I did 8 sets of 30 seconds, with 90 seconds rest between. I did 4 sets of burpies with the full push up and 4 sets without the push up. I did them around 6 pm and felt like crap until about 11 pm that night. Keep in mind, I'm recovering from a six week lay off due to an injury!
What really surprised me is how sore I am all over the whole body. My lats and abs are the sorest I think.

they are a glorius new world of pain aren't they? Beats the fuck out of running.

you really want to mess yourself up, do 20 seconds of burpees, 10 second rest for 8 rounds..

AKA Tabata-burpees AKA Fucking Nasty Horrible Painfull Shit

AKA Real effective way of getting the conditioning up to par....;)

Yeah, I've tried Tabata workouts with other exercises and it seems like your form really goes down the drain after the 4th. set. I think it is GREAT for conditioning but the longer rest peroids are more benifical for muscle endurance. Then you can make progress by shortening the rest peroids. JMO

Burpee's kick my ass. That's why I love them so much. After I'm done; I'm shaking, worn out, and feel like I just came out of my MMA class.

Has anyone ever tried burpees with a weighted vest? I just tried that today and ...whew...

I've done them with a 40lb sandbag, holding it to my chest for the jump. I think I got to like 11 before I wanted to chew my tongue off and bleed to death, just to stop the pain.

I've always found burpees a little heavy on my shoulders, like if I'm not careful during the sprawl part I could tweak something and be laid up for a week or two. Most of the time I do sandbag shouldering instead, which uses pretty much every muscle from calves to forearms, with no possiblity of injury.

Try alternating 30 seconds of burpees with 30 seconds of jump rope. Do that for a 2 minute round x 6-8 rounds, with decreasing rest in between. I'm at 6 rounds with 45 seconds of rest. It's awesome.

WOW, that's pretty good bro. How many times do you do this a week?

Have you ever tested your resting heart beat? What, is like 40 bpm?

Awesome job!!!

Black Jacks always kick my ass, i normally do them after a already intense workout.
start at 1 burpee, then do 20 squat thrusts. then 2 burpees 19 squat thrusts ect ect. If you can do it straight with no breaks you will be feeling good! Have any of you guys tried this?

Rookie here...what's a Burpee? They sound vicious.

burbees totally suck. its the closest i can get to the feeling of taken too much drugs and not sure what the fuck to do. that being said im trying to incorporate em into my routine at least twice a week.

at teamtompkins we got this awesome one with burpees mixed with sprint punching it just wrecks people

I'll have to give that a try. When I do burpees I usually do 4 rounds of 1 minute each, with 90second rest between sets. Still kills me by the last 30 sec of the last round!

amen. i avoid running like the plague.
Me too. I can't stand running, not sense I was in the Army. I did it for a while last year, trying out the guerilla cardio that was going around here for a while. Seemed ok, but I can't do it in the morning now. My wife goes to work way early and I can't leave my kid at home alone. I used to run down to the track a couple blocks away and do it there, but I get up early enough as it is. Screw getting up even earlier to do it before she goes to work!

Do burpees have carry over to running? I'm doing an event called Tough guy (toughguy.co.uk) and wanto incorporate other exercises that will help my conditioning. Obviously i will be running, but it's so boring and i want to mix things up a bit.

Thanks.

I don't know if they directly carry over to running, but in conjunction with running, jumping rope, etc... they will greatly help to increase your over all cardio.
