I weigh 167-170lbs. Only been deadlifting properly for 6 weeks.

I'm mid 30s (not too far from late 30s haha). Using a hex bar.

How well (or not) am I doing? Opinions (good or bad) appreciated.

If you had been deadlifting for years I would tell you that's a pretty average deadlift. But, considering its new to you that's not bad at all for your size and a good start. Keep up the good work dude!

As long as you're having fun, getting stronger and seeing improvement then you are doing just fine.

Good job on lifting, remember that a hex bar is much easier than a standard deadlift. I find I can throw 60+ lbs more on the hex bar than the standard barbell.

Yeah, I've heard hex is easier but it saves my back, barbell deadlift was hurting/injuring it and I've had quite a few lower back issues over the years.

How much are you lifting with each?

Thanks, what do I need to deadlift for it to count as a) a good deadlift; and b) a great deadlift - regardless of time spent deadlifting?

a) Put 400 more lbs on the bar
b) Put 500 more lbs on the bar, and use a bar.

So, the various guys I've seen at my gym doing around 400lbs to 450lbs qualify as what?

I tell you what. If I get to 400 or 440 lbs I'll be very happy. Not trying to win powerlifting competitions.

Anything over 405 at 170 lbs I would say is a "good" deadlift. For sure stronger than most people in a commercial gym setting. Anything over 500 I would say is great at your body weight. Again, I'm not a powerlifting expert I just enjoy the sport. I've only been taking it seriously for about a year and a half now.

Depends on their body weight. For example: a 200 lb+ guy pulling 400 is nothing special but a 150 lb guy pulling 400 is pretty kickass imo. So really you have to look at their size and what not.

At 160-170 lbs and in your late 30s 440 is a very attainable and impressive goal. But be warned, if you get there you will want more. I always said if I hit 500 I would be happy. Then once I got it that became 600. I recently pulled 610 back before the holidays. Now I want more.

Thanks, good to have something to aim for. I'll be happy if I can even get to 400lbs or more. And yeah even if its a hex bar...

What are you deadlifting after a year and a half and what body weight are you, if you don't mind me asking?

610, impressive! That's not even on my radar haha.

I pulled 610 at around 230 lbs. I'm going to compete at 242 as I'm around 240 now. I've been lifting for a long time but I just started taking it seriously about a year and a half ago.

That being said, at 242 bw 610 is average I guess. I was ecstatic to get it but I'm hungry for more. No more maxing for me though until my meet in April. I'll likely go for 625 or more but we'll see.

Thank you my friend. As I said, it's not crazy impressive at my body weight but I was thrilled to get it.

In the end its all about pushing yourself and personal achievement. 6 weeks ago I was only deadlifting 155lbs, now I'm at 310lbs, so defn more than I thought I'd achieve in 6 weeks. My goals don't stretch any further than 380lbs min to 440lbs max. If I ever get there without fucking my back up first, maybe I'll re-evaluate...

I was just teasing a bit, although I think the standards for a 'great' deadlift regardless of time training is pretty high. At 165lbs the WR is like 760lbs. Which blows my mind.

I'm at BW ~158 right now, and DL about 250 after ~7mo lifting broken up over a couple years. So I've got nothing to talk about, shits not even warm up weight

Ahhh 610lbs at 242lbs is not average dude. That's a pretty big slap in the face for the average people.

Great lift!

310lbs is really good, I'm comparing what I am lifting then and now.

There was a time (about a yr ago) with my bad back that I couldn't get 135lbs off the ground it hurt so bad. the only way I was able to lift it was because I was halfway up and my ego took over because there were people around, lol.

Now I'm repping easy with 235 and recently pulled 270. I'll be extremely happy when I can pull 300. I also weigh 170.

Well, he said he's a powerlifter, so if he's comparing himself to other 242 lifters...
I re-read it and that was probably the case! My mistake, you're right.

I think it's very easy to get tied up in what's average for the elite or downplay accomplishments. It has a lot of merit as competitioner, as it forces you to do better and train more. I am relatively weak in the lifts and I am not at the elite level in anything I do, but I am never satisfied either and can certainly relate to that mindset. That burning desire to do better and that lingering feeling you are not, and will never be, strong or good enough.

It's probably why I pull the brake a little when someone brushes off lifts that makes you stronger at that lift than perhaps 99%+ of the population, even of adult males. It's alright to give a little credit. Not to be satisfied, of course, but a little credit.

Also it gives credence to the rest of us, and makes us feel less weak and insignificant. Yes, this is basicly all about my sensibilities haha.

To the OP: Seems like a pretty good lift at this point in your lifting career, but a trap or hex bar is hard to compare to a regular deadlift.

It depends what you are comparing him to. If you're talking the average 242 lb lifter at a meet then he's above average but compared to the best 242 lifters he's nowhere near elite.

source: USPA classification standards found via google.

And of course the hex bar throws it all out of wack.
