Hi everyone, I am curious about what everyone's perspective on warmups for the deadlift are when one is doing work sets with both squat and deadlift. Today I did 3x5 at my current max (I am doing a slightly bastardized version of Starting Strength), and by the time I got to deadlifts I felt relatively drained. By the time I had finished my warmups, I could barely pull a single rep of my 5 rep work set. I don't want to make excuses, but I would like to know:

How much warmup is recommended on the deadlift when I have already squatted heavy (at least for me haha).

Before anyone asks, I did search this and while I did find some information most of it was related to the deadlift on its own, and I feel that my situation may be different due to the strain of the squat as well. If I'm wrong than feel free to tell me that and I can use some of the info from other threads. Thanks for your time!

Um, rest longer?

If you're doing something similar to SS, then use the SS method of warming up.

start with maybe 40% of your work sets with a few reps, then go up in weight and down in reps, make adjustments of what works best for you.

id recommend reading starting strengths warm up. i dont have the link handy or id copy it for you. its much better written than what i posted.

also like mentioned, rest longer.

I recall the SS Wiki saying you could do a shorter warmup for DL because you should already be warm for it. I used to follow the prescribed warmup for other lifts from the Wiki, with one set instead of two. I think the "prescribed warmup" is

2 sets of 5 @20%
2 sets of 3 @40%
2 sets of 2 @60%
2 sets of 1 @80%

And so I would do that with 1 set instead of 2. Later, when I switched programmes if I did OHP on the same day as DL I would use the same warmup because I used to (horrible arm-) clean the bar to press, so again was always pretty warm when it came time to DL. I might have actually for this from the Wiki, I don't remember.

Then again, I have had quite a litany of injuries including lots of back problems, and my DL was not strong, so my personal experience is not necessarily anything to do by.
