The Inland Revenue Department has frozen boxer David Tua's purses from his last three fights because of an unpaid $2.2m tax bill, his wife and manager Robina Tua has revealed.

Tua will barely see a cent of purses and TV money from his fights with Shane Cameron, Friday Ahunanya and Monte Barrett or the substantial settlement from his long-running court case with former managers Martin Pugh and Kevin Barry, Robina told the Sunday Star-Times last night.

She blames the shoulder injury, which has kept Tua out of the ring since June, on the IRD freeze, saying they cannot afford proper medical attention. Tua trained for the Barrett fight without his fitness trainer because he couldn't afford to pay him.

Tua's financially stricken state was also a factor in his rejection of a lowball $400,000 world title fight offer from Wladimir Klitschko last month

^^^^

damn right they do.

But still, its apparent that Tua is gonna keep fighting to repay the debt that he has. His main motivation is money at this point, not of holding the strap.

It really sucks that he couldn't even afford to pay for a trainer for his last fight with Monte.

Do you know how much money you need to have made to have $2.2million outstanding in taxes. GTFO with the sob story please, Robina Tua.

1+

"He doesn't have the money to get proper training, food and supplements and doctors and therapy. The dream is still there, he wants to be the champion, but it seems like it is never-ending: we got rid of the court stuff, now it's the IRD."

lol.. so much crap i dont know where to begin.

These fighter should have taxes held out of their purses before they see any money. Then this wouldn't happen, the temptation is just to much when the money is there to be spent.

EFF taxes!!

If a majority would agree stop paying income taxes it would force politicians to implement national consumption taxes which are fair and equitable and include everyone.
People whose lives have been destroyed by back taxes (whether its from poor management, bad investments or bad advice) would not be impacted to the point of desperation.

The money he earned was HIS money!...NOT a government's!...He should not OWE anything.

Boxers are grown-ass men; they can make sure that their financial obligations are met like big boys.

i really hate reading about stuff like this especially to a true good guy in boxing like tua....when a boxer HAS to fight solely for money and only money its the first step towards complete deterioration of ability which was in full display for the barrett fight...tua has beaten so many heavies who've at times been a heavyweight champion of the world but never him.....for crying out loud he fought weak chinned monte barrett to a controversial draw in which he should have lost plus was nearly knocked out..wel i hope he gets one more big payday before somebody plays the spoiler role

Well he better make sure he stays healthy because he'll need a few fights to pay it off and then save some up!

QFT

Doesn't matter if it's David Tua or the Brown Bomber, this "tax the rich because they're evil" only hurts the poor when they become rich and don't know how to hide their money.

Flat 15% tax across the board or GTFO
