But the story has my attention now. Dante was taking into hell and shown the 9 gates of hell but why and what happened to him when he came back from hell. When he died did he go to hell or heaven.

Who wrote the story of Dante. Was it a church or a Dante himself.

Its the first part of a trilogy. By Paradiso it gets pretty bad. I thought this was standard high school reading.

The poem is called Inferno, and the author is Dante. The original poem is written in Italian; most translations are a pretty tough read.

If I remember correctly, it starts with Dante meeting Virgil in a midlife crisis of sorts (the first lines of the poem are something to the effect of "I found myself midway through this life, astray") and from there they begin their tour of hell.

I always thought it would make a great movie.

What do you mean by Bad. Like his life gets more fucked up or bad writing and i should bother reading it.

The Divine Comedy is a trilogy. Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. I'm sure I'm misspelling everything but I'm not wikipedia. Each book tells of Dante's journey through each location of the afterlife. The first two books Inferno and Purgatorio tell of hell and purgatory. Hell and purgatory are structured in circles or layers making it conceptually easy. Well in Paradiso, heaven is represented as a rose which makes less sense. Also it turns into an abstract love letter to his lover who is guiding him through heaven. I wouldn't bother reading the last book.

The game Dante's Inferno is loosely based on this.

Read Dante's Inferno in a culture course in university. But all be honest when i saw the thread i instantly thought of the game as well. Not a bad game, repetitive but fun.

Dan Brown's last book called "Inferno" has a lot of research and facts about the divine comedy.

It's not a great book, but if you interested in Dante, it's worth reading.

This

Isnt Dante's Inferno required reading for most people? It should be, as it is a fucking masterpiece. Do yourself a favor and read it, TS

How have you never even heard of it before? Dante was an Italian poet, he was grief stricken when his lover Beatrice died. In response he wrote The Divine Comedy where, in the vein of Odysseus and Aeneid, he decides to travel through hell, purgatory and finally up to heaven to find her. The poet Virgil is his guide.

Why make movies about greats like this? I hate that.

Beatrice was his 9 year-old muse, he only met her twice in his life.

The Inferno is a political statement about the Florence and the conflicts between a couple different political parties over decades. Dante wrote it as if he as a younger man had actually taken this journey and he used the characters he came across in hell and purgatory to warn the politicians that he didn't side with that their time was coming. Most of the book is prophecy because his narrator's theory was that those in Hell could see the future(though it was written after the history was already made as to appear prophetic).

The form he chose for his verse was pretty original. He's using the tools of poetry we'd favor today, which is especially strange for what we think of as an epic ie Milton, Homer. Very elegant in the original Italian. If you get an English/Italian side by side copy you can experience a bit of it even if you don't know any Italian.

I have it as an audio book, i would get high and than just lay in bed and listen.

Great times. :D

My second favorite book in HS behind The Iliad. If you haven't read Inferno you're really missing out.

And yes, it would make an amazing film if done right.

Muslims will not like this poem.

Interesting, I have read it, well not the whole thing, but parts of it. I haven't studied the poem in any great detail either, so thanks for that. I assume you've taken/taught classes on this?

Yeah that's what I've heard, as I only speak English I have to trust the translation I'm reading. I'll look out for a side by side copy if I see it. I recently got a new copy of it though, it's a recent translation so I'll see how it is.
