Lol Dana said a lot of guys have the old school mentality of "You've got to take it from the champion!" In other words if Reyes was champ and Jones as challenger (hypothetically), and both performed exactly the same as they did on Saturday, Reyes would have won. At least Dana doesnt say that's his personal opinion but by even mentioning it shows some level sympathy for it. Timestamped
Its a fantasy You cant score a fight that way. IF you score it round by round, like its supposed to be,then this take it from the champion BULLSHIT should never come into play. This isnt pro wrestling motherfucker.
To beat the man, in MMA, you win 3 rounds to 2. Math is math and if you win more rounds than the other guy, you win the fight. to be the man you gotta beat the man is Ric Flair WWF scripted logic.
But for whatever its worth, that is an unofficial tradition in combat sports, that the impetus is on the challenger to beat the champion. Of course, its also actually true in the literal sense that there are at least three scenarios in which the champion doesn't win but retains his belt; a draw, a no-contest or a win. A challenger on the other hand, can only walk away as champion by winning outright. But I hear what you are saying.
That tradition is bullshit people keep saying when they decide to be cucked by whatever bullshit decision in favor of the champion happens. It has no basis in reality.
I mean there's more than a few examples of champions being unseated by razor close decisions soooo there really isn't any standard at all modern day to that view point.
Well, right or wrong, the basis in reality is the fact that judges and the public have been influenced by that thinking for decades and decades. It may be wrong-headed and unfair, but it is a real thing.
