Reporter asks Dana if he used to have a problem with guys challenging fighters in other weight classes and uses BJ Penn as an example.

"Let's put this in perspective, BJ Penn was 155 pounds and that's before we had lighter divisions and he wanted to fight at heavyweight"

    Timestamped

"When you talk about a real fighter, BJ Penn is old school from the old mold and BJ literally wanted to fight everybody that was out there. And I respect that, but there are limits'

Crazy to think a LW like BJ would want to fight Randy Couture.

They don't make em like they used to.

It's no surprise his record is as bad as it is. He was not the most disciplined fighter and fought anyone regardless of size. His record really doesn't reflect how good he actually was.

What an animal. He fought like half his career against much bigger guys. Hughes, Machida, Rory, Nick Diaz, Fitch, GSP ect are all much larger

Was he motivated then though? Or was this just the fat version of him that just did not feel like cutting down at all.

Of the top of my head the man beat Hughes, Florian, shrek, pulver, Caol Uno, gomi, fought Edgar, Gsp, machida. Went from lw to lhw (and he was a natural fw). I say his record pretty accurately describes how God damn amazing the man is.

Usually when people talk about this kind of stuff you can pretty much guarantee it's bullshit but BJ is a different breed, there's no doubt in my mind he would have fought Randy if given the opportunity. BJ took a 220 pound Machida to a decision.

However it reflects what a ballsy fighter he was

Dan Henderson is another in this mold, but faired a bit better with wins over Nog and Fedor - still lost to Shields doe

BJ is the only fighter all of my friends agree on and like. We respect that type of mentality here in New Zealand.

Would have been a good fight imo. Couture said BJ was extremely difficult to take down, and we know how good he was on the ground. His boxing would have kept him in the fight standing, too.

Machida was a heavyweight when they fought. People forget that. Machida gassed him out with size but BJ held his own.

Bj is a perfect example of why weight classes exist. He’s a god damn animal and deserves all the props in the world, but his record is the way it is from going up and fighting bigger guys. When he was in his prime and fought at lw, he wrecked everybody, but lost most of the higher weight fights he took. His skills were amazing but when you fight a guy as big as Rory who is very skilled as well, you’re gonna take some L’s.

people forget that the only time Penn was ever knocked down was by Rodriguez, think about that. He fought all these bigger guys and was knocked down one time in his career.
