Mr. Dana White, ever the shrewd businessman and promoter, has always protected his investments whenever he could.

Both Khabib and GSP seem to genuinely want to fight each other, but does such a fight serve the interest of the UFC and Dana White ?

    GSP

    - 36 years old
    - Has already peaked
    - Is at the twilight of his career
    - Refuses to engage in unfavorable matchups, and serve as a sacrificial lamb to hype some new prospect
    - He will significantly boost PPV sales, but MMA is already very well established in his native country of Canada

    Khabib

    - 30 years old
    - Emerging PPV star
    - Is at the peak of his career
    - Undefeated, which adds to his mystique and is essential to his marketability
    - Is a gateway to the mostly untapped market of Russia, and is more importantly a talisman for the whole Arabic / Islamic world. The business prospects that Khabib can provide for the UFC are immense.

If GSP beats Khabib, Dana White will have jeopardized a potentially huge cash cow in Khabib, while not gaining much from a GSP win. This is exactly why this fight has not been made yet, and GSP went all-in with retirement play.

When Dana White protects someone like Brock Lesnar or Conor McGregor, everyone loses their mind. When it's Khabib being protected by his promoter, suddenly no one has a problem anymore with Dana's tactics.

I just think that no matter who wins or loses, GSP is going to retire in the cage after the Khabib fight. So it'd hurt the aura of Khabib if GSP washes him, then he goes on to fight Tony or rematches Conor.

No doubt. Dana doesn't want GSP to devalue another belt. And GSP would walk through Khabib with ease provided the weight cut went well.

Dana White is protecting UFC, they don't need another champion not willing to defend just like GSP did with MW belt, GSP won't get another title shot.

I dont think its “protecting khabib”. Its just bad for business to have some asshole come in and beat the champ just to decide he is going to quit again.

GSP is 37, turning 38 btw. Not 36.

Khabib is no star despite being the best. Much like Woodley. Stars appear in the media.

I live in an Arabic country, and over here Khabib is pretty much a living god especially among young Muslim males.

I don't see the problem. Khabib will be able to come back after a loss to GSP.

I wonder if the khabib suspension had anything to do with this fight not materializing. If that were the case then we can go ahead and blame Dillon Danis for indirectly ruining this super fight.
Let’s just go ahead and blame Dillon Danis for this.

37 year old GSP would not walk through Khabib... Whoever believes that is delusional. George looked slow in his last fight against Bisping, and that was a year ago. He would have only gotten worse, not better.

If, and that's a big if, Khabib loses it would be a very close fight.

Only on Sherdog does a contract welcher get defended.

If GSP posted here, the only title he would get would be a pink belt.

Among young Muslim males who probably didn't even watch his fights before the last one...This Muslim/Jew communitarianism is annoying as f**k.

With regards to GSP, he only has unfavorable matchups. Everyone he has never fought has the key to defeating him.

It takes two to tango and Georges already has his sights on fw now that the khabib fight isn't happening.

    I never understood this.

The fans want to see the best fighter in the world.

If you can "Cherry Pick" the world champion, doesn't that say more about the champion than the "asshole" who came in to beat him?
