McGregor balked at media obligations, UFC pulled him from the card to flex their muscle, McGregor threatened retirement. Enter DC/Jones as the replacement to that fight. Not really. That was the only non-interim belt being disputed at that night. It HAD to stay on top. It would be even more odd if they put an interim belt or a simple 3-rounder above that. They would basically be admitting that their female roster sucks.

As much as people didn't care about the women, it's his job to go and say that those girls are incredible, that everything can happen when the cage closes behind them, that it's an intriguing clash of styles, that if you can't appreciate what those girls do you don't know shit about MMA, all that yadayada Dana and Rogan say to promote a fight.
