The welterweight title picture is quite muddled, to say the least. In October, it looked like Rory MacDonald was set to fight the winner of Johny Hendricks vs. Robbie Lawler 2 after he stopped Tarec Saffiedine, but then that shot was revoked when Dana White stated that a rubber match between Lawler and Hendricks was likely. As it turns out, Lawler requested time off to heal after fighting 18 rounds over the span of 4 fights in 2014, so the UFC has now come up with a new plan for Lawler's first title defense. Per Ariel Helwani on UFC Tonight, the more impressive victor from Johny Hendricks vs. Matt Brown and Rory MacDonald vs. Hector Lombard will become the new #1 contender. Hendricks accepted the fight with Brown because he wanted to "stay busy" and not wait for Lawler to heal up.

It's not the first time that the "most impressive performance gets a title shot" method has been implemented. Fans may recall a similar instance in 2012 at UFC on Fox 4, when Dana White declared Lyoto Machida the #1 contender for Jon Jones' belt after his KO of Ryan Bader was deemed to be better than Mauricio Rua stopping Brandon Vera. Machida turned down the short-notice title shot against Jones at UFC 152, had to fight against Dan Henderson after that, and never got his rematch with Jones.

Hendricks vs. Brown is on the main card of UFC 185 on March 14th, while MacDonald vs. Lombard is on the UFC 186 main card on April 25th. Based on the dates of the two fights, don't expect Lawler to fight again until late summer or early autumn.

I'm getting real tired of this "more impressive winner" shit.....

Didn't he just say Kelvin can get the shot too with a win over Woodley?

If you ain't sure dude just don't say it, plenty of other ways to hype these fights without saying "this guy gets the shot" then eventually doesn't get it.

didn't dana say Kelvin Gastelum could possibly get a shot if he wins his next fight?

better but still bad.

Winner of Hendricks vs brown gets title shot?

Bruh. they're both coming off losses to the champ they don't deserve a shot.

Kind of like a mini tournament... but not? The logic is sound.

Haha throw Gastelum in the mix too.

You never know when it comes to Dana and title shots. Unless you're Conor McGregor.

Only one of those 4 guys hasn't already lost to the champ, should just be Lombard with a win

He also said Kelvin could get a shot with an impressive win over Woodley, Also Diaz could get a rematch with Lawler with a win over Silva

So basically what he is saying is nothing at all

Rory deserves it over the rest if he beats Lombard.

how many phukin people will dana say can earn the next shot?

It was supposed ot be rory for months now. BOTH HENDRICKS AND BROWN JUST LOST TO LAWLER FOR CHRISTS SAKE

That's bullshit. Rory Lombard winner is the only right answer.

I'm not sure why the UFC even makes any deceleration regarding title shots. They have no obligation and often not intention to abide by them.

Might as well throw the winner of Howard-Larkin in there as well.

Rory should be fighting for the title since Dana said he would be after his last win (a very impressive finish). Dana White has zero credibility.

That's funny. Three of those guys recently lost to Ruthless. I hope Lombard KTFO Rory. Rory has a tendency to make fights boring, but so does Lombard.

I would usually say the guy who fights Brown is going to have the more impressive win, but Johnny might fuck that up by dragging an exciting striker to the mat.
