We are now talking about the LW belt going a 18+ months before being defended for the first time while an Interim champ has to defend his. I still think that the Diaz fights are fair exceptions. One was a short notice replacement and the other was a rematch many (myself included) felt was deserved. As Dana said here, once it was clear he was not gonna defend the 145 title (or rather, once they were able to have the claim that they've had a two weight champion) they took it off him.

I'm not saying what's going on with McGregor currently is the right or preferred thing, but the way he lays it out here, he's not technically incorrect.
